That is a wonderful story: what a great thing to do in childhood!
I was thinking that another reason to go at the hottest time of the year might be that there would be fewer mosquitoes, but perhaps you and your friends did not feel the bites anyway? From the Wikki page, it sounds more a place of pilgrimage, particularly for Mahasivaratri, which falls around February.

Nick,
At that time, this is the place known to people by "Word Of Mouth". My super-seniors told My seniors and my seniors told us and they will say : 1) Folks , there is a place near AP border which is only for adventorous, Thrill Lovers 2)Nothing will be there and in the night you should have the courage to stay alone in the forest with NONE around in absolute darkness with no electricity and we should not light up flames 3)It's for groups who are closely knitted who could rough it out and should adjust Or extend their help to the group 4) Not even the mimimal Comfort should be expected and this place you should Visit ONLY during peak summer as in the slightest Rainy season , the streams will be flooded (as it's a forest Stream with no proper bankings), Reptiles like snake or Bugs might be a problem and you could not sleep in the Ground and you don't have a Centimetre of Roof to hide and you will be totally afraid of all ! And we passed the same guidelines to our juniors who wanted thrill And hence We choose peak summers and Mosquitos ,Hmmm No Not even a single bite! And the Temple what they mention too is not so big as far as I remember and now only I know that temple is so famous with the villagers around. Interesting Place !! |

Yes, You are right synonymous.. Once a Place can be reached by Private Transport then all the Other Environmental related issues will come into play .. But still that place may not become 100% touristy one as the climate is just average to Extreme summers and it involves Hard walk for 2-3 kms to the waterfalls(even if one reaches the Base of the forests by car!)...

Srirangam near Trichy
I highly recommend a visit to Srirangam which is an ancient island citadel across the Cauvery river from Trichy. The Ranganathaswamy temple complex deserves to be on the Wonders of the World list. The sculptures, carvings, architecture, frescoes are superlative. Even the general atmosphere remains just as it would have been in ancient times. It is well known as a Maha Vishnu pilgrimage site, in fact it is considered the foremost Vishnu temple. Pilgrimage aside, it is a fantastic place for a tourist to visit, to go back in time and enjoy the open air living museum.

I liked Gulbarga on my recent 4th tour of India.
The hotel was cheap and very good value for money. There were NO tourists anywhere which made it interesting to see India without the influence of tourism. The Muslim monuments incl. the famous jama masjid inside the old fort, the haft gumbad, The Dargah of gesu Nawaz sahib etc. were all great chances to see Deccani muslim architecture at its best and Deccani Urdu culture at work. Bidar and Bijapur are much more touristed but Gulbarga was Ok. I didn't get a chance to go to Firozabad , the ruins of the old palace of the Sultan from the 1400's but Gulbarga is worth a stop if you are touring the North of karnataka. |
