If you are looking for some thing that is off the beaten track and not many people go there then check out Zanskar Valley. It is a really beautiful place and is mainly thronged by trekkers who want to explore many trekking options Zanskar has to offer.

You can access Zanskar either from Padum (road from Kargil , as you mentioned ) or from Nimmu , the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar river (before Basgo and Alchi). This is also the start for the Markha Valley trek , around eight days . Wouldn´t call it off the beten track , though : probably the the most well-trodden path in Ladakh.

Charlie Loram´s book will have the deets.

While staying in Lamayuru monastery in the winter I used to look at the old caravan trail from Srinagar , running quite a ways away from the modern road, always wanted to check that out : connecting to to the road somewhere around Mulbekh , my guess. Should make a great trek.

The road will take at least 2-3 years to complete, it has barely reached Chilling last year as per the info I got from people working on this route.

Never mentioned any road further than Nimmu. OP asked for access for among other things , a trek. Some of us do walk.
