sggal is right.

Kanhatal is near the Banderpunch mountains, in the Uttaranchal Himalaya.

Correct ?

It surely is in the Uttranchal hills... Gharwal... and not Kumaun.
A quite and beautiful place on the road connecting Chamba ( In uttranchal ) And Mussorie. This can be reached either via the rishikesh, Tehri, Chamba route or via mussorie and Dhanaulti route. Is located about 60 Km from Mussorie with Dhanaulti almost mid way en route.

Would have given you a price Sggal if you had given the above informtion.. .

Well you were close......

We wanted to go from Chamba to Mussoorie via Dhanaulti last February, but the road was blocked by snow and no transport was going, so we had to go back the long way round through Dehra Dun.

What is there at Kanhatal? Any places to stay there? Quiet and beautiful appeals to me.

Hi Alan !
There is this small resort run by a person who had made a holiday home there and later converted it into a resort. this has a few rooms and also has a few cottages which are off the road.
This guy is a grt singer when in the mood around the bon fire.
Am at Agra at the moment else I would have passed on his numbers. Mark me a PM reminder and shall give it to you.

Update

The resort is called 'The Hermitage'. It's actually in the next village called Raunslikhal 1 km away to the east, but never mind , close enough to take on the 'cooler' name.
These villages sit on the main Mussoorie-Dhanolti-Chamba ridge, by the road-side in fact. There are some nice walks down on the north side thru pine and cedar trees.
http://www.kanatal.net/

The 'tal' itself is more of an embarrassment than a lake, altho it's setting isn't too bad - inside the govt. apple orchard. If anyone does venture to seek out the lake, don't say I didn't warn you.

Kanatal is 40 km east of Mussoorie and 17 km west of Chamba on the old Tehri Road.

There is now a new resort in the vicinity called Kanatal Resort, which is obviously even further away , at Thangdhar to the east. Actually between Thangdhar and Saur P.O., about 4 km in all east of Kanatal. Complete with spa! As if the view of the Himalaya isn't enough to refresh tired souls........

A third resort nearer Kanatal is called 'The Terraces', a bit off-road in fact. Never seen it, here's the website:
http://www.theterraces.biz/
WARNING: They quote Tagore, Einstein, Goethe and Thoreau, among others, and have obviously included this service in their tariffs. (Phew, pricy!)

Question Going to Kanatal next week

Going to Mussoorie-Kanatal next week with family. Planning to self-drive by Alto.
This is my plan
day 1: leaving NOIDA at 5 a.m. and reaching Mussoorie via Roorkee-Dehradun road. Stay in Mussoorie for 1 night.
day 2: leaving Mussoorie and going to Kanatal via Mussoorie-Dhaunalti-Kanatal-Chamba road. Stay in kanatal
day 3: stay in Kanatal
day 4: coming back to NOIDA via Rishikesh-Haridwar-Roorkee road

Now the questions:
1> Is their petrol pump in Mussoorie ? If not, then where is the nearest petrol pump. Where is the nearest petrol pump in Kanatal?

2> Is the NOIDA-Roorkee-Dehradun-Mussoorie road condition ok at this time?
- thanks,
smnray

1) 2 pumps at Mussoorie, but not on the Tehri Road. You'll have to fill on the way in or back-track unnecessarily. Depending on where you're staying, of course.
2 pumps at Chamba, of which one is on the Rishikesh road.
But wanna save a few rupees (hey, ask a roadie a Q, and this is the kind of answer you'll get!) - fill up in Roorkee (cheapest gas in UA), shud see you thru till Rishikesh, very easily till Chamba. Muss is the most expensive in the area.

2) Yes.

Thanks Dilliwala for such a quick response. I am staying at Picture palace side. But every rupee matters , so follow your advice and will fill up in Roorkee.
- thanks,
smnray

Just FYI, if you're staying PP side, you will have left the pumps behind you on the way in. From PP you just head to Clock Tower to get onto the bypass road, which will join up with the Tehri Road a few km out of town.

for me, having a early morning views of Himalayan peaks and being able to capture it in my camera give the best relaxation which no spa can match (:-). Though this time, I am not sure whether I shall be able to get a view, since all the weather websites show cloudy weather for Mussoorie at present!

Except that the spa, as I mentioned, is not at Kanatal, but at Thangdhar.
