A friend and I cycled from Kullu over Jalori pass and on into Kinnaur and back about eight years ago. Of course I was younger then. As I am almost sixty three year old now I keep my rides down to one day trips and then less than one hundred km and then I am pretty much dead the next day but I keep on trucking! |

Fantastic! Mountain trekker
Your trip remind me my solo trip to Khardungla 18 months back. I did it on 115 cc bike. Chadigarh> Manali> Sarchu> Baralachala> Rumtse> Leh> Khardungla> Leh> Kargil> Drass> Srinagar> Jammu> Chandigarh. Any idea how far Kathmandu would be from Mahendranagar (Nepal)? |

I am Dipin from Gurgaon. As i can see that you guys have some some experiencing crossing to Nepal through Banbasa, I am planning to Cross border through Banbasa instead of Gorakhpur in a car.My plan is to go to Banbasa , Mahendranagar, Butwal, Pokhara, Kathmandu, and exit from Kakarvitta Border to Siliguri , Darjelling ,Sikkim and back to Gurgaon abut 3500kms in total..I am planning for this trip between 15th-30th of Dec.I would like to know how much do i need to pay for the permit per day for the car to Nepal?.Would it be a problem if i have a valid driving license of mine but my car papers are goona be on my uncle's name original though?.Is it a right time for traveling to Nepal politically?.
I welcome everyone's suggestions regarding my trip.Hoping for a prompt response asap. Dipin |

Wonderful trip indeed!
How difficult were the border crossings? Entry formalities, time restrictions, red-tapism, etc? Do bikers also have to pay the road tax/entry fee inside Nepal? Did you get proper stay, food and repair facilities en route?

Great info in the link you sent me! Thanks.
You mentioned something about Customs Duty payments - what is the final say on that? Do Indian cars require a Carnet de Passage? I presume that the checkposts at the border are open only by day - any idea of the timings? I heard that cars are charged Rs 500 a day as entry charges - could you get any additional info on your way back? What was the cost of petrol/ diesel in Nepal when you travelled? Is the network of pumps good? Do Indian vehicles - mine is a Scorpio - have service stations? I find it is mostly the Marutis, Santros and the Tatas doing service on Nepali roads. Any reason why you chose Jan for your trip - I would assume that in the summer more places are open. There must have been also places which were cut off by snow in the higher reaches? |

Hi,
You had a good journey there...I am planning to take exactly the same route till i reach Pokhara then i would go to Kathmandu if suffecient time then would like to go to Khasa China border...lets see how the things go...As you said you would ask your cousin to provide me some info regarding the entry through Banbasa by car, importantly ask him if it would be a problem if i take my uncle's car instead of mine?..Embassy people neither reply to emails or answer phone..also ask about charges per day for indian car etc...Thanx a lot mate... |
