I need a beach - a quiet one at that.....
Ok, I should be in India (finally) within the next 2 weeks, and I'll be a happy wanderer for a couple of months.
But my girlfriend is flying into Mumbai on Dec. 28th, and has informed me she wants to spend New Year's on 'the beach'. Now I'm normally happy to suss out places for myself, but since he only has a month, I'm going along with her plan for January. I'm looking for a beach, not Goa or Gokarna, but near Mumbai, not looking for a party, just somewhere peaceful, and dare I say it, romantic to kick in the '06. Any ideas? |

Yje sunsets from Juhu Beach (just North of Mumbai) are fantastic ....... but it's not exactly a desert island, though.
Good to hear from you - I trust you are still enjoying your trip! ![]()

Juhu beach -- yikessssss -- that too on a New Years eve !! There are loads of small beaches 4-6 hrs drive from Mumbai. Alibag, Murud etc. These are the main towns (small ones at that) and there are lots of small villages in and around which have beaches which are not "developed". But by that you will also not have access to posh and plush rooms etc - more like small informal home stays. Try asking the Tourism office in Mumbai as they will give you a more up to date info. Earlier in the year I had been to a small village near Alibag called Nagaon which has a beach and not many people, just a few locals. We stayed at a friends of a friends place which was pretty basic and a little away from the beach (just as we wanted it) |

To visualise Juhu beach - think of Blackpool during the illuminations -- and multiply them 20 times for crowds, noise and more !!
But I love them both in their own naff way - my wife's a northen lass and she has a soft spot for Blackpool and now Juhu. |

I've only actually seen Juhu Beach, (from our hotel's garden) not been on it ..... but it was mid-January and looked fairly quiet to me! So, so, sorry if I might have recommended anything even vaguely resembling Blackpool.
Just forget what I said, Conor - and take advice from the others ![]() |

South of Mumbai, is Harnai beach... 6 hours by road.
Further south is Ganapatipule, 10 to 14 hrs from mumbai by road. Both have MTDC resorts, nothing great... but adequate. Harnai is lonely, and Ganapatipule is the bigger one of the two... so you could create your own lonely spot. I have slept on the sand at both the places, in spite of having a room. [Used it only to have a fresh-water bath] New Year's eve may see some drunks at these places, but nothing serious. There's enough room for everyone. The room booking is done by MTDC Nariman Point office in Mumbai.

Hi indiawise, I was actually planning on coming through Diu on my way down to Mumbai, and I don't like back-tracking.
But I should be in Diu sometime mid-December, so maybe see you then! |
