How to get to Battis Sherala (Maharashtra)?
Hi everyone.
I don't know if this is the right place to post this question, but here goes (forgive me if it is the wrong one )This place, Battis Sherala, a (remote) village in Maharashtra, is supposed to be the most impressive place to go if you want to visit for Nag Panchami, the snake festival. Does anyone have an idea of how to get there? I tried to contact Maharashtra tourism board but after half an hour they made we want to trash my head against the wall - repeatedly because they kept putting me on hold or referring me back to the number I had started from. Very annoying. So, is there anyone who could help with this? Thanks in advance, jumila |

Battis Shirala can be approached by road from Kolhapur (50 kms.), which in turn is an overnight's train journey from Mumbai.
Alternatively, one can also make it from Sangli, which is a couple of hours before Kolhapur. Sangli to Battis Shirala is approx. 65 kms.

Hi Shimla.
Thanks for your (quick) answer. But HOW can you go there? I just talked to someone from Prasannatours in Kolhapur and he said that there is not direct bus and you HAVE to get a taxi (he said something of about INR1500-1600 for that). Is there a bus from Sangli - or a train. Is the taxi the only way to go there? I read that hundreds of tourists go there so there must be an alternative ... Thanks again, jumila |

Hotel Panchratna in Islampur arranges visits to the village and looks to be an ideal place to stay with rooms priced between Rs160 and Rs600 a night.
Their website has a page about the Nagpanchami Festival. To get to Islampur from Mumbai you will need to get an overnight train to Karad, then get a bus from Karad to Islampur, there should be plenty of busses as the route is mainly down Highway 4 and these look to be 2 of the biggest towns in the area, they are also only 26 Kms. apart. You should e-mail them to get more info and to book ahead. - info@hotelpanchratnaexecutive. com Mumbai to Karad. Train 1017 (Ex Tu)(1035 on Tuesdays) departs Dadar (Mumbai) at 22:45 and gets to Karad at 06:03 the next day. 2 tier air con = Rs 744 3 tier air con = Rs 480 Sleeper class = Rs 181 (not air con)

When you get back from India, tell us all about the hotel, the festival and the village, I'm sure there are many members (including myself) who would be very interested. I do think you should book the hotel and the train tickets now, you can have the train tickets sent to a hotel in Mumbai. Enjoy the trip. You could take a little plastic snake (the ones that extend) with you for a laugh. ![]() |

Hi Steven.
Actually I am not researching this for myself but rather for friends so won't be able to post any journey-experiences as there will not be a journey . But once I do get to go to India Battis Sherala is definitely on the list and then I will so take a snake. Thanks again, J BTW, here is some other information of how to get there I found while asking around ... in case anyone else is thinking about going: Battis Shirala is between Kolhapur (50km) and Sangli (60km) in Maharashtra’s Sangli district. It’s a one-hour charter flight to Kolhapur (from Mumbai). There are no direct buses from here, so take a taxi for the day (INR 1,500-1,600; approximately USD 25). - This obviously is the not so budget-sensitive way. Charter flight and all ![]() |

Islampur is 27 km south of Karad on the main road, just beside the east side of the road ( 2 km). Shirala is around 15 km from Islampur on the other side of the main road.

Battis-Shirala.
hi , do your home work well and gather info on the Nag Panchami festivities before you end up in Battis Shirala , this small is little town very famous for the NAG- PANCHAMI festival .
Lately I have heard that ANIMAL RIGHT activist and some N.G.O's are forcing the govt to put a ban on theses festivites. |
