We need to set some parameters to what makes a place an off the beaten track star.
Picturesque-- Local flavour-- tradional fair or something particular. Lovely place to stay-- or???? One of the places I visited in Brazil was a simple hamlet with just 62 houses spread across. What made it worth the visit was that it was untouched -- rural -- farm land-- and the host in the farmstead we stayed in were so convival -- theor home cooked meal so mouth watering -- that the memory of that place matches that of big stars like Rio, Mata Atlantica and Bahia. So lets work on the parameters, friends. |

I think actually one pending idea is to have a forum for each state, period, rendering the off-the-beaten track forum redundant.
Better to have those threads advocate those areas right ![]()

when i was in india in the seventies, i just got on a bus and when i saw an interesting looking place, i would alight and then casually ask around about accommodation. sometimes this would take me to peoples homes and i was always treated courtiously and even spoilt. i did quick portrait sketches, often in payment and they were a hit.
in 05 i went, only to kerala and caught a bus to a small town north of varkala. there were no tourists there but there were some rooms for rent down by a river, near the ocean. it was gorgeous but i felt a bit uncomfortable there ,as a woman on my own.( a bit too much interest was shown me) but with company it would be a lovely place to stay. first do a day trip, as i did. i went there by bus but walked back to varkala along the beach and as it gets closer to varkala, there is a path along the top of the beach and then up to the clifftops. some nice, spread out, places to stay along there and the beaches were without the masses. restaurants and shops and stalls within walking distance.it felt very safe around varkala and the food trip was exceptional! if you want budget there is plenty around. i was there february. |

I have found this site provides lots of good travel details for places not fully covered in most guide books: http://wikitravel.org/en/India And since it is a wiki you and all the grandmothers and grandfathers you can round up can add and edit at will. ![]() |

Great link. Checked some of the districts I know, and found it to have crisp and concise information - though with a few errors here and there. A good effort by NIC anyway. Thanks Pranav!

I may sound selfish, but its better to be circumspect while publicising off beat places. If hordes of holiday makers and revellers descend on these offbeat places, they won't remain offbeat anymore, and half the charm of visiting them would be gone.
As it is, its getting increasingly difficult to find holiday destinations, which are not frequented by hundreds of travellers from the nearest metro city, heck all over the country!
