Here's another one

http://www.asi.nic.in/asi_monu_alphalist.asp

If you like ancient monuments, this is the ultimate lollyshops of delights. Just click on the state you're interested in and then up will come roughly 40+ monuments and archaeological excavation sites to visit in the state ... T

You can then find out about what was found during site excavations by going to http://www.asi.nic.in/asi_publ_indian_archaeology.as p
India is one of the few countries that has its archaeological dig reports online (summaries, alas, but still very helpful)

The next part is to find the sites on google earth, and if they look like they're worth visiting then go to the driving directions website to find out how to get there (km, travel time ... all useful if there's a taxi trip involved). Also, if taxi drivers don't know where the sites are (this often happens for less touristy sites)it's good to have a map printed off.

I guarantee you will be heading off the beaten track this way.

But you really need to know what you're doing. Many of the historical sites I visit are not in the guidebooks, or at least not in those guides that cater to a foreign market. You never really know what you'll find, either. India has thousands of these places, and it can only afford to protect and maintain a few of them.

Often, when you arrive in a small town or village, it may be hard to find what you're looking for. In such cases, I found that asking children was usually helpful. If there's an old fort, lost in the jungle, you can bet that a bunch of little boys will know where it is. Often, they are quite willing to show you, although often at a run. And get ready to be dragged along some very tortuous paths.

Exploring old ruins, though, is not risk-free. You'll run into snakes, wild dogs, fall into pits, whack your head on low doorways, etc., and also encounter some shocking graffiti and impromptu latrines. And you'll see many a palace that's being slowly torn apart by timber-looters. If you go upstairs, be aware that the floor might collapse.

You also have to ask yourself about your personal impact on such historical sites.
That's all very true, Indiaprof. The bats and monkeys can be on the rabbid side too. Yes, there are certainly risks, one has to be careful and cautious at all times in some of the remote, run-down places.
