Hi,
Travelling around India for c. 6/7 weeks. We have the first part and the last part of the journey planned. First Part is from Bombay to Goa, the last part is from Calcutta to Varanasi before we travel onwards to Nepal. Does anyone have any suggestions for travel between Goa and Calcutta i.e. where's good across India? Any suggestions will be printed off and stored in my rucksack. Thanks G |

you can consider the following options:
Kerala: beach, wildlife sanctuary. Karnatak: wildlife sanctuary, IT city Bangalore, Mysore Brindavan garden. Tamilnadu: Chennai, the capital city; Madurai, the temple city; you will have enormous options to experience the beauty of temple architecture. If you are interested in seeing the Mughal and British history of India, you may consider travelling to Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan. When talk about natural beauty in India, a trip to India is not complete unless you visit the Himalays. Depending on the time you go to India, you may want to go to Gangotri, jamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath (in the north Indian state of Uttaranchal). Himachal Pradesh is another tempting option. Try reading Lonely Planet India, and this will make your decision a lot more easier. |

There are buses to Hampi from Goa.... worth a good look and very peaceful. You could cross over from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu (I liked Mamallapuram and the temple at Madurai the best) and then travel up the coast to Calcutta - stopping to check out some of the Orissa sights.

I guess you would probably like to leave North India (Rajasthan, Delhi, Agra) for another trip so this route would take you south from Goa and then up the east coast to Calcutta.
These are all places we enjoyed staying. Goa - Hampi - Mysore - Cochin - Kerala Backwater trip to Kollam - Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary - Kodaikanal - Madurai - Pondicherry - Mammalapuram - Chennai - train to Bhubaneswar - Puri - Konark - train to Calcutta It depends how fast you want to travel. You could possibly fit more places in. If you would like more detailed info on any of these places just PM me. Enjoy your travels. |

Thanks
Thanks for the ideas folks, you've certainly given me loads to read up about. I appreciate all the ideas, will probably take a route someway similar to the one suggested by Alan D. One thing though, I read somewhere that there's not really much to see in Orissa, is there much truth in this?

Compared to say, Rajasthan, Orissa hasn't got a lot of must sees. The temple at Konark is probably the most visited site by foreigners and there is a minor travellers scene in Puri, probably because ganja is legal there, or it used to be anyway. More Hindu temples and Buddhist cave temples around Bhubaneshwar. Many interesting tribal groups in the Eastern Ghats but very difficult to travel in these areas due to Goverment restrictions. If you find yourself pushed for time you could take a train direct from Chennai to Calcutta.

Lets be honest here... The eastcoast aint so great at all, allthough there is a great Hari Krishna Veg. place in Puri if I recall... I would not go back that way... I would rather se Rajastan if you havent been in india before and maybe go from there towards varanasi... Konark is for Sure not such a big deal it has the sexfigure temple and thats it, dead turtles on the beach allthough they do have a dance festivall there... If you REALLY want adventure go to Chenai/madras and head from there to the Andaman Islands and then you return to Calcuta on the mainland... Have not been there myself but Its suposed to be somekind of rough paradice acording to some...

well i would agree with ikuru, the place worth seeing is the andaman islands, totally unspoilt back to nature thou u have the necessary amenities, but the water is crystal clear, and the beaches r totally unspoilt it is like a hidden paradise.and then u can come to city of joy ,thou there is not much joy.
