Getting from Spiti to Shimla

After our trek from Tso-Moriri to Kibber (Kaza) we plan to return to Delhi via the Hindustan-Tibet-Road.

1. Any actual informations about road-conditions?
2. Is it possible to rent a jeep-taxi in Kaza?
3. Costs?
4. Is it getting much more expensive we take about 5 days to go to Shimla instead of 2?

Thank you
Matthias

"The Hindustan-Tibet Road" - love the expression. The Leh to Lhasa caravans, the road to Yarkand , Kim`s Lama...

Ahem. Back to present day :

*The Rothang ("plain of corpses") Pass opened at April 11th, according to Border Roads Organisation

* There is a excellent posting from Spiti including transports, by haji , check it out

Kaza to rekong Peo is a 9 hr journey by public bus if the road is ok
Allow for mountain slides & other uncertainities on this leg. Stay at Kalpa and admire the Kinnaur Kailash looming in front of your balcony. Next morning R.Peo to Shimla is 8 or nine hrs by public transport. Road as of today is ok.

Check out the excellent thread by Haji referred above. If you go by public buses, a 5 day journey will only mean hotel room & food costs extra.

You will require an inner line permit between the journey from Sumdo to Jangi.... permit avlble at DM's office in Kaza.

IMHO, crossing over the Parang La (Tso Moriri to Kibber)requires an inner line permit from both the districts : i.e. Ladakh and Spiti.... many people only take the Ladakh permit..... so take care of the bureaucratic formalities prior to your actual trek
