Frozen Lakes in India during winter

Hiya folks,

After a 11 day trip of the Spiti valley, I am already planning for my next trip.

I would love to see some frozen water bodies preferably a lake in the winters.

I learned that the lake at Nako freezes completely. Also the Pangong Tso freezes but Pangong Tso will be inaccessible.

Can you folks suggest some frozen lakes which can be visited during the winter, preferably in states near to Delhi like Himachal or Uthrakhand but I won't mind going to Sikkim or any other state.

Also the lake should be mainly accessible by road with maybe a few kms of trek not more than that.

Cheers !

Sirloskar Lake, a few KM's of trek from Jalori Pass in Himachal Pradesh... It is frozen in the winters. Will be accessible by road till just a few KM's away...

We tried getting there this Feb, but the trail was all snowed out so had to return back...

Check this, you'll get to know of the area... http://www.camphimalayan.com/activity.jsp

By the way, Pangong Tso will be accessible if you enter Leh via a flight, I have seen photos of cars driving on the frozen lake... Should be a great experience..!!

Hi Saurabh,

Thanks for the info. This is another thing that baffles me. Is Leh open for tourism in the winter ???

I thought the town completely shuts down or something ?

Small villages do shut down as people come down to lower altitudes in the winters, but such a big town like Leh can not afford to shut down... It will be less crowded for sure, might even look deserted, but there are people over there...

well try changu/tsangu lake in sikkim. Its an hour's drive from gangtok and is totally accessible via well-maintained road. It is near indo-china boarder so roads are well-maintained and road will take u directly to the lake.

check pic.

haha yeah. Well, when i went there, it was all covered in snow in such a way that metal fence was also totally covered in snow. There was no way to see which is the border pillar and all. There was a crowd of 20 people surrounding the officer and we were standing very very near to the boarder (as i said, chinese soldiers were just 10 feet away!!)

Well, small crowd was in front of the officer and bigger crowd was in behind. I chose small crowd as i wanted to get near to the officer to hear better. I went to the back of small crowd AND SUDDENLY OFFICER SHOUTED TO ME 'THAT GUY IN GREEN JACKET AT BACK OF THE CROWD, DO YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE CURRENTLY STANDING IN CHINA!!!' I WAS SOOOO SHOCKED LIKE WTF !!! I IMMEDIATELY LOOKED BEHIND, 3 ARMED CHINESE SOLDIERS WERE STANDING 5 FEET AWAY FROM ME, LOOKING AT ME SUSPICIOUSLY !! i immediately rushed towards my home country

well i was glad to be back that was my short trip to china

In some winters, even the Dal lake in Srinagar freezes, and jeeps have been driven over it!

Driving jeeps/cars on a frozen water body is not a good idea.. A big NO... In midwest, I hear atleast few cases of kids got drowned while playing hockey in frozen lake. I mean, Ice hockey.

Yes, indeed... It's actually an excellent idea, unless you crack the ice and drown

dude when i said chinese soldiers patrolling 10 feet away, it was a general sentence. Means, if you go there, you can see them from 10 feet away and when i first saw them, they were about 10 feet away. After i mistakenly had few steps on their side, obviously they came near to me and i was nearer to them anyway as i crossed the boarder. so, at the extreme, i was 5 feet away.

mate don't be this much sarcastic to everyone. if you have further queries, feel free to ask.
