Does anybody know if this place exists?
somewhere south of Goa, Karnataka maybe, that has nice beaches and does not attract too many non indian tourists, somewhere that doesnt have nightlife and you can just relax the days away - away from beer drinking type of holiday people, no offence meant to anyone.

Jamie 11,
From southern border of Goa to Mangalore you have three hundred kilometres of wild sandy beaches. Om beach in Gokarna is like staying in Goa few decades ago. Is probably the kind of places you are looking for. Not far away from there you have plenty of temples and some of the most interesting sites in India. Jorge |

Jamie11,
I think hitchhike is not the best way to move in India. I'm not sure but north of Mangalore there aren't not trains, so bus should be the first election. Everywhere in Goa you can hire bykes. I cannot advise you, as I normally travel with car and driver (at my age is always a good value for money) Jorge |

why this obsession with beaches in goa? beaches in puri (orissa) and digha (bengal) could be better substitutes.

Gokarna is very very cool
Mostly travellers living in hammocks on the beach There is a big big chillum scene and an ever growing Israeli scene, but it is still multi national As it is a Shiva pilgrimage site there are many sadhus. ThisI feel is one of the appeals over Goa ...the Hindu vibe the place has It is very much like goa maybe 15 years ago and earlier Haven't been in a few years so don't know how much encroachment there has been on the area However if you're looking for a party scene stay in Goa There are definetly no parties in the style of Goa. A few years back people tried to hold a party but it was stopped by the locals which is fair enough. However, the over riding vibe is very very chilled out and a wee slice of paradise Don't expect many home comforts ...another appeal of the place Gokarna is now not the big secret it once was when i first visited and it is now very much on the backpacker itinery Enjoy Bryan

Maharashtra Beaches
Why not try some of the beaches in Maharashtra, there's Ganpatipule (which is near Ratnagiri) or further south you have a few quiet beaches near Malvan like Tarkali, this area also looks good for a bit of exploration with a few ancient sea forts temples etc.
In Goa itself there are still many quiet options, Benaulim springs to mind or try Betul near to sandy beaches and a genuine Goan fishing village though it come with an authentic fishy smell as well, not too many tourist stay here and there is no "scene whatsoever" Further south Patnem may just about live up to your expectations but again the beach is changing fast. In Karnataka there are beaches near Karwar. (you used to be able to visit the islands off shore here and they had a Tourist bungelow, sadly the navy now owns this and a sizable chunk off land for their new test facility) These beaches continue south and the Konkan Railway links you with many of these places!! |

Try Bekal fort beach near kasaragod in north kerala. Been there today. Very quiet and undeveloped. Some accomodation available.
Also look for beaches near Kannur. Use google for more info. Don't miss Theyyam if you're near - look Theyyam thread in kerala section
