Delhi to Puri - Somewhere in between

ill have about four days in mid july to get from delhi to puri for rath yatra. I'd like to take a train to somewhere right in the middle for a day or two and then continue on to puri.

I'm looking for somewhere really off the beaten track. so far im thinking Katni just because it looks like abig city thats never mentioned in any guidebooks. Does anyone have a good city for an in between day or two stopever or does anyone have any info on katni?

thanks

Just a reminder to myself to look into this later.

I once looked at Sambalpur and the surrounding waterfalls as a possible destination, it has direct overnight trains to Puri.

As do Gaya, Raipur and many other places.

Hi.... this mail skipped my attention.

anyway.....
A wonderful place in between Puri and New Delhi can be Amarkantak...which is the origin of Narmada and Son river...a beautiful and unexploited place ...a must go

try to googling it....

Went there four years ago...there is a direct train named Kalinga Utkal....you have to get down very near to amarkantak .and then take a taxi for it

Smile Delhi to Puri..In between

Hi there,

I would suggest that you board the overnight train from Delhi to Raipur.(you could also get some good fares on airlines like Jet airways & air deccan) It has some old temples, then drive off to Jagdalpur the same day stay overnight and from Jagdalpur drive to Puri with a stopover at Raigarha. The drive is beautiful and at Jagdalpur you have good options to stay at hotels like Naman Bastar.

At raigarha there is a basic accommodation from OTDC (Orissa Toursim Development corporation)

Some info on Jagdalpur's places of interest is as under:

visit the largest waterfall in India the Chitrakoot Waterfall and enjoy the beauty of the fall in floodlight. Also visit the Woodcraft, Terracota, Bamboo Craft and weaving centres around the area.

On route from Jagdalpur to Raigarha and further to Puri you would find many tribal villages like Dongaria Kondh Tribal & Chatikona Tribal and others. You could always hire a cab from Raipur to Puri while visiting these lovely places.

Hope my information is helpful

Enjoy ur trip

Katni is very Close to one of India's nicest National Parks at Bandavgarh.

Great chance to see a tiger here. Hurry while there's still some to see!

Just noticed that the trains to Puri stop at Umaria as well which is even closer to the park.
Also on the train route between Delhi and Katni is Gwalior and Jhansi (for Orcha/sonagir/Datia)

Bandhavgar is closed during the Monsoon

Chanderi, Shivpuri, and Deogarh are all in between, and off the tourist circuit, and all are most interesting for a day or three.
