Chamba
I fell in love with Chamba when I visited and am already planning my return. We stayed somewhere called 'Orchard Huts' which is absolutely gorgeous. Its run by a family and they were really welcoming. I would recommend it to anyone.

chownie, did you visit Brahmaur of the 84 temples? Some of them have 1000 year old statues of dieties. If you haven't, go your next trip. There are daily buses from Chamba to Brahmaur (8 hrs) If its summer, you could also go up to the Manimahesh lake (trek).

We visited Brahmaur, also spelt Bahrmaur and Bharmaur, in the autumn of '71. There were a lot of gaddi shepherds on the road bringing their flocks of sheep and goats down from the high pastures.
At that time the bus didn't go the whole way to the village - we got dropped off on the main road and had to walk the remaining distance (about 10K's or so) on a pretty rough unpaved road. We mamaged to find a room, I think at the PWD rest house and spent a day looking at the temples. There were certainly a lot more temples than houses in the village. I'm certain though, the bus journey didn't take 8 hours as it's only about 60K's from Chamba - a few hours I think and then the walk but I imagine one can find transport all the way now. I've posted a few pics of Brahmaur in the picture gallery, as has maree, if anyone's interested. It's a beautiful part of HP and well worth visiting if you're in Dalhousie or Chamba. |

Yup, I was there in January this year. I have a family photo too if you'd like a copy, can email to you (didn't post it in the gallery)
The whole family are so welcoming though, it's a really lovely place to stay! The only one I didn't meet was their eldest son, he's a guide for Intrepid now so he was away on a trip while we were there. And Sunaiye is the most incredible cook ever, it's well worth a stay there just for her cooking ![]() |
