Binsar, near Almora

For those of you who also use Lonely Planet Thorn Tree site this is in Yarra territory, close to Almora. We were told about the place by the Park Manager at Corbett National Park who thought we might like it. There is nothing there except a state run tourist rest house set in the forest, facing east with a view of the Nanda Devi Range. It's at about 8000 feet, cool in summer and cold at night in winter, when we were there. There is no bus service so you have to take a taxi from Almora or if you are in to doing a bit of trekking you can take a bus to a road junction and then walk the rest of the way up to the rest house. Best to pre-book a room from Almora. It's a great place if you would like to experience the solitude and beauty of the Himalayan forests.
Good travelling

.

The whole of Kumaon is lovely..I like Kumaon better than the adjoining district of Garhwal..I don't know why. Maybe because some fo my earliest memories of mountains are of Kumaon

Yarra

Wonderwoman: Yarra is a n'er-do-well Ozzie who posts on the LP Thorn Tree ISC branch

We've never seen him here, at least not with that handle, and I think probably not with any other.

I was in Binsar in winter last year, and can confirm all that Alan D says. I was alone there for five days in the RH - excellent food, friendly staff, funky rooms. (Chilly bucket, "hot" water showers, though!)

So few people visit Binsar in winter that they don't bother to switch on the generator. This means that you have dinner by candle light and there are candles placed in the corridors to guide you back to your room. When we were there an added bonus was a violent thunderstorm over the Nandi Devi range one night.

Great place, excellent birding and walking but bring some warm clothes. If you can't manage without a "hot " shower then forget it!

Ah, I see. Don't recall seeing him there.

I'll be in Almora in October; it's one of my favorites... but I don't know if I'll go any further up the hills ... depends on how cold it is. Am I the only person who takes long undies to India in October?

Yarra hasn't been posting much lately in the TT either. Maybe he is rambling in Kumaon somewhere?

Speaking of "seldom seens" - Hi there, Ankur! How are things with you?

The last post by Yarra I read was inviting people to visit him on Crank's ridge, and speaking of the haze "right now." So I think you're probably right about the rambling.

Not wanting to be in the mountains pre-monsoon, I have no choice other than to ramble on this board.
