Best smallish city for Holi

I want an exciting Holi experience. But at the same time I dont want the crowds to be so massive I get overwhemled. Can someone suggest a smallish city where they celebrate Holi in a big and fun way?

I think probably fly into Goa... but would be willing to go anyway where the action is!

If during Holi you are around goa, then dont bother comming to Shantiniketan from there. Pune might be a good option to go to.

Braj - between Delhi & Agra offers the most diverse, spectacular and sensuous Holi celebrations, spread over 2/3 weeks in a different village each day - a sort of processional theatre. I know the Holi in Braj extensively so if you really want to follow a cultural delight for a few days or longer - Ask the question?

Ho ho - Yeah I know what you mean - but No, in this case because Holi extends over a several week period there are events and locations, in the villages that are sweet and full of Bhav.. after all the essential Holi is elegant, sensuous and esoteric.

Paleface-
I was planning on spending March 11th and 12th in Mathura for Holi, which is the center of Braj, correct?
Any advice for better towns, better dates, longer visit?

Vrindavan would be a better choice than Mathura - VVN is more a walking experience, the Temples, the samaj music all resound to renewal with the vitalities of the Spring season. Ras Lila at Vrindavan, flower petal Holi - is enchanting to see, 'specially at Jai Singh Ghera, Ras is on at different places over a week or so in VVN.

The day of holi itself, the 11th is it?? Could see you locked down in VVN 'till the afternoon at least, that morning some roads get closed by just after dawn, folks extracting passage fees and dispensing rites of passage. So being inthe vicinoty on 10th would be preferable.

Good to know - walkability it key for me. It's my understanding that VVN has a massive influx of pilgrims for Holi, is there any chance of getting a room at this point? Any guesthouse you would recommend? If Holi is on the 11th, do I want to be there the week before or after?

Being locked down on the 11th isn't a problem. Looking at my schedule, I actually have enough time to get there on the 8th or 9th. Would that be worthwhile?

Thanks!

I will need to check out dates !!
Gulal (colour powder) in Braj-Vrindavan up to 11th March
followed by
Barsana
Nandgaon
Other villages

Alternatively, as I'm so way off from there - If I give you a telephone number you can call my man in VVN and set something up??
