| Om Beach near Gokarna was very quiet and uncrowded about 12 years ago unlike Goa. Don't know what it is like now though.

| Yup, Tarkarli is very good. One can try Vengurla as well on the Konkan Belt, it has some lovely islands. | |

| If you're thinking about Goa itself, you might try Agonda, which is a village a couple beaches north of Palolem. I spent 10 days there in January and it was perfect -- clean, quiet, and unspoiled beaches, but still plenty of cheap facilities for travelers, people to talk to, etc. It's probably quite similar to the more popular Maharashtrian beaches, though, so you could easily just do that (especially if you want to be closer to Mumbai). | |
