Royal Retreat varied from 800 - 300; the latter for me a single in fairly basic but clean room. My friends had a twin room, more decorated, larger with very large bathroom. Some rates in between too.

In Jan we are paying 1300 for the best room at Katkoun including taxes and an extra bed for the 13yo. Pretty good value I reckon!

Bad experience indeed, but one has to live with some disappointments in life always......I hope you liked the place at least.

I also liked Bundi - I can also recommend Orchha and Mandu in MP if you like small quiet places!! Orchha is easy to visit, esp if you are going to Khajuraho. Just take the train to Jhansi and then pay Rs 100 for an auto. Fixed price shows Rs 200 or Rs 250 (I think) but just ignore that, and walk on .... and you will be taken for Rs100. I stayed at the Hotel Sunrise - not in the guidebooks, but very good value and clean with friendly staff. Orccha's a great place to chill for a few days - great river, palaces...and very little hassle!!
Mandu takes more effort to visit - but if you liked Orchha, you will also like Mandu.I travelled from Indore by local bus - the last hour or so is particularly windy roads. It's on a plateau, so is a little cooler than the plains. Great place to hire a bike and cycle between the different palaces. Accommodation is more limited - I stayed in the MP tourist hotel, which is a little out of town but fine with bike ... or just a short walk to "town" |

Bundi is also a favourite of mine. Very sorry to hear about White Flower's misadventure.
Just wanted to point out a piece of misinformation that comes up in guides' tales, so frequently that it made it into this thread in an earlier message : Rudyard Kipling did NOT write "Kim" in Bundi. He did not write anything in Bundi. He left India for good when he was 16 and never came back. He wrote about Bundi, though, saying something to the effect that it was a personal favourite - the exact quote is on the city's website, kiplingsbundi. So, literature lovers, don't get fooled, you won't find any Kipling sites out there. Still, you'll find a lot of inspiration and atmosphere : the cistern and the cenotaph garden in Bundi are a treat for any Kipling fan. Enjoy ! Last edited by Khandoma : Nov 13th, 2007 at 13:48. I have to agree with everyone who says Bundi is a magical place. I traveled around India on a motorcycle (for the 2nd time)and unfortunately had a minor accident around Bundi, which kinda made me 'stuck' in the town for 1.5 months. Well there could have been much worse places, really as strange as it may sound, if I had to get stranded somewhere in India, Bundi would be on top or near the top of my list. As soon as I was able to walk (I injured my foot) I was out exploring the areas around Bundi. There are just so many great places. The villages around Bundi offer a view into a world very different to most of India today. The people are for most part incredibly hospitable and warm. I have nothing, but great memories of the place, despite experiencing more physical pain there than I thought was possible
. I guess the only thing is, I would urge people to really be aware when they travel the area, do not encourage anything negative. Surprisingly, although there has been an increase of tourists in Bundi the townspeople seem to be as nice as ever. No one really tries to cheat you, a rare thing in a major tourist destination. An incident about a couple being overcharged for an omelet (something like 100Rs)made it to the local paper while I was there, but that certainly says something about the people. They care enough to comment and condemn that kind of action in a local Hindi language paper. On a side note: I am a photographer and here are some photos I would like to share from the Bundi district: http://www.mitchellkphotos.com/rajasthan.html |

They are really beautiful images Mitchell - pm me so I can give you my email address to go on your mailing list, we'd love to go to the Paddington exhibition - well done for getting it by the way! My partner is a photographer by trade also, but we are treating this trip to India as a holiday and taking only a point-and-shoot (after much argument we agreed that photographic trips and family holidays are pretty much mutually exclusive). When he sees your shots I'm sure the argument will be on all over again!!!!!!

Virtuoso stuff Mitchell - how long were you touring and what machine did you use? Would love to hear more of your story in India. You were obviously were very close to your subjects to be allowed to take such accomodating shots.

kristinm: it seems that I am unable to PM you. My email is on the website under "Contact", just send me an email and I will keep you informed.
Brisso: I toured twice. The first time on a Hero Honda CBZ for a bit over 8000km in 3.5 months and the second time on a Bajaj Pulsar I think it was over 12,000km and I spent about 7 months doing it. I will post some more stuff about the trips, but perhaps a bit later on. Last edited by mitchell_k : Nov 14th, 2007 at 18:39. |

Fabulous photos of people, Mitchell and like you, I think Bundi is well worth a stay (although not in your circumstances, I'm sorry to hear of your accident). Hope all well now.
