A quite place amongst the GODS
I should not be doing this..but since there are very few people who are actully gonna go here..
I had been to Chaokari..or Chakori...last year. It is in Uttranchal some 10-15 hrs from Rishikesh.. Amazin place.. Just one guest house owned by the GOv. And the private tents A great view of Chaukhambha... very nice and quiet.. Just the village and u ..and very few people..so close to the Himalayas..feels like ur living with the GOds..

It sounds lovely; thanks for telling us.
Is that a 15-hour heart-attack bus ride from Rishikesh?

It is Chaukori.
AbhiVande, isn't it close to the hill-station of Pithoragarh?

question regarding Nanda Devi
wow, this Chaukori sure does sound like a beautiful place.
i'm very keen to also do some trekking around Nanda Devi and really get itno exploring the areas around north-eastern Uttaranchal. my question is: doing this alone, is it safe or is there too much unrest? secondly, is it toooooo freeeeeezing to do in Dec-Jan_feb or could I still get by? Any advice would be great. Thanks! Tim |

We lovingly call it "DEV BHUMI" which means the 'land of gods' Its not really freezing around there in the daylight. Days are normally warm and nights are cool always. During the winter it gets a lot cooler in the night. but the day time temperature remains more or less the same. Don't start too early during the winters for trek ... coz the ground will be covered with frozen water.. which will make the whole paths slippery. So start when the sunlight is out there for one hr. If you are going out there don't forget to go to nainital, almora, and ramgarh. The last one is especially beautiful because of its apple and mango plantations. Cheers. |
