Daringbadi, a woody hill station with an elevation of 3000 feet in Kandhamal district is often referred to as The Kashmir of Odisha. During winter temperature of these hills plummets to sub-zero level & it is said that this area on a few occasions had witnessed a bit of snowfall also. Kandhamal for its dense Sal forest , undulating hills, waterfall, lush green valleys and sweet brooks has been in my to-do list since long. During October this year finally we were able to hit the ghat roads at this part of Odisha . We spent two beautiful nights at Daringbadi & then a half day at Gopalpur On Sea on our way back to Kolkata.

It was 19th October, 2015. Howrah-Vasco Amravati Exp reached Brahmapur (Berhampur ) at 8.40 am. Sunil, a young & energetic guy from Daringbadi had reached Berhampur early in the morning & was waiting for us at the station with his green Bolero. Daringbadi is 120 Kms away from Berhampur. The last 30 KM stretch of it, mostly through dense forest & Ghat Section made us mesmerized.

We took several breaks on the ghats & it seemed to me that nature & landscape of the forest here are quite similar to the forests of Simlipal, Ushakothi Or Satkosia . Only difference is that Satkosia and major zones of Simlipal Nationla Park are at a much lower altitude. It took almost an hour to cross that ghat section & we reached Daringbadi at around 1 pm.

Great start Arup. Look forward to the rest of the TR. Quick question though - the red crater image, what equipment (cam / lens) did you use? did you process that one ?

thanks!

Thanks V_A . I was travelling with the same old Nikon D40 & the single 18-55mm Lens My friend had a 70-200 mm. I used that lens once during the whole trip to get a snap of a giant Spider . I'll post that photo. Only the contrast level of the red crater shot was corrected

We had booked 2 cottages in Daringbadi Eco Home. As of now there are only two staying options available at Daringbadi - Hotel Utopia , a hotel near Bazar area & The Eco Home located on the slope of a hillock next to the non-functional OTDC Guest House. There are eight D/b cottages in the Eco Home all offering beautiful & quiet view of the valley surrounded by green hills. Mr. Anil Swain, proprietor of this place welcomed us & without any other formality took us to Cottage No 7 & 8. We were delighted to see the vast terrace just in front of our cottage at the dead end of the Eco Home. After a late lunch we were off to rest for a couple of hours.

We passed the entire evening sitting on the terrace & as apprehended a sharp fall in temperature was felt after sunset. The black & vast valley was then gradually grabbed by thousands of stars.

Silence ! We were learning to know the silence of those mountains , the true protectors of this sleepy valley at the heart of Kandhamal.

Next morning before breakfast we had a stroll around the Eco Home. We first crossed the deserted OTDC guest house & within another 10 Minutes we reached a small village in the valley. This tiny tribal hamlet has a church also. Later we found several other churches in Daringbadi . I had a brief chat with one of the villagers & came to know that majority of people in this block belong to Christian Community

OTDC had closed it few years ago due to Maoist insurgency in Kandhamal district. It has been in a non-functional state since then.
