When I am on holidays, I follow few rules & the most important rule is.....
"I am never in hurry, I reached the place & go on exploring the place with all the times in my hands".

On 15th January 2013, at 10.15 a.m. I, with my wife, reached Berhampur & take auto for Gopalpur On Sea Panthanivas.
I always like to bargain , So, the auto ready for Rs. 160.00 & droped us at Gopalpur Panthanivas in 35 min. time ( 16 k.m).
we were at Gopalpur for 3 days, yes 3 days.

Explore the cum & quite sea beach, enjoy the sea side pavilion siting , horse & camel ride in the sea beach, visit the river mouth, spend afternoon on the top of the
Gopalpur Light House, visit the old fort & port, the new port is under
construction & visit Taratarini Mandir at the Hill top.

Taratarini Temple

Taratarini Temple

For Taratarini Visit, you need to book Auto ( Rs. 500.00) or cab (Rs.1500.00 aprx.)
You can take Rope way to reach to the hill top, we enjoyed the way to the hill top by Foot & auto also.
We took almost 6 hrs to complete Taratarini Visit, people are in hurry can complete with in 2 hrs. so choice is yours'.
I wonder...how people manage to visit this beautiful Gopalpur On Sea within a day !!!!!
OTDC Panthanibvas is GOOD if you want service & quite environment.
Non AC Double bed Rs. 700.00

There are so many sea side hotels are available but most of them are noisy.

On 18th morning we started for Rambha (45 km from Gopalpur, auto took Rs. 500.00) & reached @ 10.45 OTDC.
Panthanibash at Rambha is GOOD in-terms of place & service. (Ph 09437514896) Non AC Double bed Rs. 800.00 ( Room No 107,108 & 109 is good)

Food is delicious & spicy.

I won't like to say anything about the natural beauty, pictures will speak for it.
But few things i would like to quote.

1. Don't compare Barkul with Rambha, because, Rambha is far more beautiful regarding natural beauty.
2. Give yourself 2 days to explore Rambha with Chilika.
3. Try to book a boat for whole day rather go for Hour basis. Boots takes Rs 400 to Rs 500 per hour but you can book a whole boats for whole day for Rs 2000 or so.

Bargaining is must. You can contact Ph. 08596057502, this old man really helpful. official boots rate are high @ Rs. 650 per hrs.

During the winter, chilka remain cum so private boat are safe without life jackets.

on the Day-3 we visit the Kalijai Temple.

To Kalijai Temple

At Kalijai Temple

From Rambha, Boats will take almost 4 or 5 hrs. for up & down journey.
You can cover Kalijai Temple from Barkul but will loose the versatile boat journey.

We started for Kalijai 8.30 in the morning, on the way, we watch & enjoy the fishing technique.
Landed in the unknown Island with full of beautiful birds.
Enjoy the Dolphin in the middle of the Chilka & countless migrated birds.
I am sure, you will get some unknown natural surprise in the middle of the chilka.

OTDC Panthanivas is the only good option to stay at Rambha. There are few hotels in the market side but not recommendable.
But you should visit the market near bus stand & enjoy the delicious soup in the evening.

In the next morning, we took a bus for Barkul & reached @ 11.30 a.m.
OTDC Panthanivas at Barkul is good but not as good as Rambha.
Here food is good but bit costly.

Main Jetty is dirty.

Unmoved Beautiful Boat at Barkul !!!

For good food !!! Just go to the highway side where the famous "Chilika Dhaba" waiting for you.
Rs 70 veg thali was more than enough for us.

in the night we started from Balugaon (nearest station to Barkul) & reached Howrah in the next morning.

So we complete our natural wonder journey, next From Howrah, we will start our next journey for Human made magical wonder

I'm also a bargain lover like you, Shyamal. Great narration and excellent picture. Really, you have been able to capture different moods of sea and Chilka so brilliantly. I had also visited Taratarini temple; but your eyes on details of temple is awesome. Thanks for sharing.

Nice Travelogue with excellent photos. I recall my tour to Rambha in the year 2011 and it appears that nothing has changed which is evident from your writing and snaps offcourse. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Shyamal da, excellent description of your trip to Gopalpur-Rambha-Barkul. And pictures truly speak volume for those places. We are planning to go there during the short span of holidays i,e. 15 - 18 Aug 2013. I have gone through other post related to Gopalpur. But here I got tempted on Rambha after seeing your TR. So please advise me whether that time is good for Rambha / Gopalpur. If so, then what destination we would choose to go - Rambha or Gopalpur during that time because both of them seem fascinating to us. We will be 8-9 in a group.

Dear Raktim

Thanks.

Between 15 - 18 Aug 2013 i.e "days with hot humid & rain", hence you will not get the polite charming
both for Rambha & Gopalpur.
To enjoy Rambha you must go in between December-January.
You will be 8-9 in a group, so book a whole boat for a whole day & just discover the Rambha.
You can consider Gopalpur during 15 - 18 Aug but it will be hot !!!!
So consider the December-January days.

Shyamal da,

Thanks for your reply.

I understand the point you wanted to say here. Actually in the month of Dec of this year, we would be planning to go someplace else since that time we would have bigger span of holidays. That's why for shorter trip we are planning to go here. In such case we would book ac accomodation for Rambha / Gopalpur. But frankly speaking, the serene beauty of Rambha as seen in your picture, truly captivated us.

Dear Raktim

Still I would not encourage you to go for Gopalpur & Rambha during 15-18 august.
Room can be AC but how to AC the Mother Nature.
Also, May to August is the local fishing prime time, you wouldn't get the Good Boats.
You can consider Araku, Vizak etc.

Happy Touring.....

Welcome to IM family!

Sorry, I do not have any idea about current cost. I had visited Gopalpur on Sea long time back. Hopefully, you may get feedback from other IMers, who had visited recently.

Post Script: I am again sorry. Now I realized that this query was addressed to shyamaldas, and not to me. Please ignore my reply.
