Yoga bags

A shopping question: I carried over my yoga mat to India in a large plastic carrier bag which was fine (not very cool, of course ... ha, ha) but am now looking for a more sturdy means of transportation for when I hit the road in a couple of weeks. Any ideas on a store in Mumbai where I can buy one of these? I noticed loads of them in traveller-type areas in Kerala last year but haven't come across any (even at home) since.

Yoga mats and mat bags are hard to come by in India! I've been working with a tailor in a slum in Delhi - I taught him how to make a yoga mat bag, and we re-designed it a few times to get it just right. Wide shoulder strap, velcro pocket, gold embroidery strip from a sari, satin lining so the bag slides in easily. We're selling them online in the US, but we have a decent stock in Delhi right now. If you find yourself in the Capital City ever, send me a message. I can take you on a tour of the slum and everything.

Mats themselves are a lot tougher to find. There are some at the import stores like Nike and Reebok in the more upscale markets.

If you want to see photos of the slum or the mat bags, here's a link:

Enjoy your yoga and your travels!
Om,

I study yoga in Chennai and yoga supplies are pretty non-existent. However, in India, take your favorite yoga mat bag to a tailor, buy some great material, and have him (or her) make you one (they will copy it).

Thanks Warren ........... will definitely take you up on that offer should I be in Delhi this time round. Love the photos and the desktop wallpaper too! Yogagal, thanks for your advice. In the end I did actually get an initially very bemused tailor in Mumbai to make me a bag which is so 'classy', it puts my worn out clothes to shame - should have got an outfit to match!!!
