Where to buy a (cheap) TV in Mumbai?

Hi,

My current TV (CRT type, 29" LG) may well have died yesterday, after 4 years of good service. I am thus considering reinvesting in one, but as I will be leaving India in 2 years and am not so much of a couch potato, I do not need anything too fancy. So a similar type (bought for 17 000 rupees in 2003) would do well.

Are there any brands you would recommand for that kind of price (15 to 20 000 INR)? I am looking for 29" at least, so it will be CRT, not LCD or plasma. Where would you suggest shopping (I live in Breach Candy, hence South Mumbai would be a better option)? Any idea as to whether it would be worth waiting for the festive season offer?

Thanks
Thomas

If you were an Indian you would have got the TV fixed and used it for some more years...

Anyhow..why don't you simply refer to newspapers....loads of advertisements come in them these days...

CRT models are really cheap..maybe you can also exchange the dead one..

Don't worry, I am still hoping to have it repaired; someone should have come today, but not sure whether he succeeded (by the way, any address of TV repairmen most welcome!). So the question was "juste in case he did not manage"...
I'll have a look at the newspapers indeed, thanks!

In the price range you have specified you can easily get what you want. The prices have steadily gone down over the years so no cause of worry.

Around than a Decade back a 21" round picture tube Color TV used to cost around Rs.20,000. But now a flat CRT of the same size can be purchased for Rs.7,000-8,000.

Vijay Sales seem to have a big range of budget tellies? There's one in Sion and another further South.

Sony Money are a bit more upmarket but they have decent aftersales.

Croma in Juhu tend to stock more LCD's but they are trying hard with aftersales.

I went the LCD route - nice telly but judging by the heat it puts out I think it's heavy on electrical consumption?

Look for something at Opera House (pretty close to Breach Candy) where you have a huge row of showrooms selling TV's. They will also have their own repair teams which you can call to service your TV. It is not a problem to get it repaired for a very small sum even if something major is wrong with it unless the picture tube is gone which is very doubtful in just a few years!!! If it is a LG TV that you have then you can call up the LG service team for repairing it and they should be able to solve your problem. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Aadil.

Dont know about Mumbai, but in Bangalore i got the best deal at a Metro. TVs made in India are significantly chepaer than the imported ones.

Thomas, you can get your TV repaired by a shop called VideoMan in Parsee General Hospital lane (opp the American Consulate) Just ask anyone out there they will lead you to it, its behind a building called Sita Mahal. I suspect the problem being moisture. I live at breach Candy also, due to the closenesses to the sea, electronics tend to get spoilt after a few years, one quick remedy would be to put silica gel bags inside them but not so very effective. The i feel should ride you off for another year a two. Else as other suggested opt for a new one either at Opera House or at Vijay Sales at Prabhadevi, look out for exchange offers...(though they do insist on a working television, you could try to bargain your way through)

Cheers
