Where can I find good quality crystals & silver jewellery in Mumbai
Hi All,
Im travelling to Mumbai for the first time in November for 2 and a half weeks to visit a friend who lives there. I would really love to know where I can find good quality crystals and silver jewellery, as well as Indian Sandalwood essential oil and insence. I read about a good market for silver jewellery in another thread, tho cant for the life of me remember what it was called ! It also warned about fakes and poor quality...does anyone know how to tell the difference? Im sure he will know of some good places but would love to hear from anyone who has brought any of these things, also what I might expect to pay? Thanks, Emma ![]() |

I don;t know anything about Mumbai, but I know a little bit about shopping and a little bit about jewellery, and on that basis my recommendation is... stick to the government emporia. You may pay a little more and you won't be able to haggle (not my favourite pass time anyway) although you may get small discount if you buy a lot, but you will probably be fairly safe in what you buy.
How to tell fakes? simple: get a lifetime experience! What else could anyone say? Golden rule: buy things you like at a price you are happy to pay. Leave being concerned about the actual value of the piece to dealers and collectors; shop and enjoy ![]()

Going to the Government owned handicraft emporium is the best, just like what Nick has said.
To buy Sandal wood and products made of sandal wood, Bangalore is the best. I am sure, u will get good stuff in Bombay also. |

Silver jewellery can be purchased from any of the hundreds of shops at Zaveri Bazaar near Kalbadevi. Crystals I have no clue as to where to shop in Mumbai... maybe the tourist haunts of Colaba?? I had a crystal supplier [from rural India] supply some HUGE crystals directly to my home in Mumbai... they were not of the "shopper" quality but rather of "collector" quality. Large one was nearly 13 kilos in weight [uncut] and the smallest one was a perfectly cut crystal ball [of flawless quality] of around 3 inches diameter with many intermediate sized cut crystal balls.

Oh! Crystal balls are magic
! They have a life of their own. I try to avoid them as they are very expensive in UK, but, like puppies in a petshop seem to say, 'take me home please' ![]() Right. That's my mysticism done for the day, back to irreverence ![]() |

Another recommendation for the Govt. or state shops. Geniune stuff and no chance of getting fakes. It is pricier from as compared to other shop but then the positive side is that you are buying ethically and you are guaranteed that the item producer/artisan is getting a fair price. No danger of the middlemen creaming of the profits while the real producer get peanuts.
Crystal - My knowledge is a little dated but at one point the Heera Panna Shopping Complex (in Haji Ali) was THE place. In recent times malls and other places have mushroomed all over the place so it might be worth taking a look. hope that helps |

I did most of my shopping in Colaba Market. There's hangling, but the prices can't be beat. Everything you want can be found there from silver jewlery, sandlewood figurines, cristal to Kurtas and saris. It's just 2 blocks away from the Gateway of India.
