TEN MUST DO’S IN MUMBAI

1. Early morning Gateway of India and the gaily coloured boats in the pink dawn light

2. The heart of Mumbai - bazaars Mumba devi - chow bazaar and then ice cream at the 110 year old store run by Mr Icecreamwalllah

3. Gandhi house and then Malabar Hill and the Towers of Silence for the Parsi dead

4. The wholesale flower market and then on the way back Whisper in the mouse’s ear at the Ganesh temple – Tuesdays are the big day

5. Churchgate Railway Station to see the dabawallahs delivering 75000 lunches daily – studies by Princeton and Yale on the efficiencies

6. The Prince of Wales Museum and Café Samovar

7. Gallops breakfast on race day

8. Early morning at Sassoon Market for fish, a trip to Crawford Market to see fab fruit and veg and Lockwood Kipling friezes with a mid morning break of a Falooda at Badshah then off to Trishna for lunch

9. Sundays Chowpatty at dusk and pani puri

10. Bollywood - Cinema / Juhu Beach and then a drink at the Sun’n’Sand Hotel pool side

have only seven more things to add

1: View the architecture of CST station (also known as Victoria Terminius)
(and the architecture of university buildings, art gallery and the municipal buildings)

2: Gawk at crowds in the peak (rush) hour suburban trains...(try getting in if you want the experience)

3: The Queens necklace (marine drive) at night

4: Go for bhel puri and vada-pav ..

5: If you come during music concert season...mainly in winter...attend hindustani, carnatic and ghazal concerts in auditoriums dotted across the city and suburbs..

6: If you come during Navratri..Check out dandiya nights...Group communal dancing with sticks/rods...If you come during Ganesh Festival..stay through for Immersion..If you come for Janmashtami (Krishna's birthday)..watch for human pyramids (groups of men and women) that try breaking a suspended pot (heights of 40 feet...)

7: Catch Theatre plays...In English (and there are some in Hindi, Marathi & Gujarathi)

1. Visit the grounds, gardens and 19C buildings of the JJ School Of Art, near Crawford Market. For nostalga buffs, don't miss Rudyard Kipling's birth place, ie Lockwood Kipling's residence.

2. Check out the library of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai in the old town hall building. It is for members only but I was able to pay for a one day visit.

3. Feed the inner man and rehydrate at Leopold's Cafe, Causeway, Colaba.

You are correct. The library is on the east side of Horniman Circle and faces west. I have read that the society was an original co-occupant of the building.

yes, a very interesting building, and a lovely drowsy library feel to it. you can imagine asiatic scholars quietly going about their studies under the ceiling fans.

1)Trek off the beaten path to Elephanta caves

1. Early morning walk at Malabar Hill.

2. Evening visit to Band Stand and Barista's at Bandra West.

3. Stroll along Marine Drive in the morning hours.

4. Visit World Trade Centre at Cuffe Parade and the Himachal Tourism Office followed by a visit to the India Tourism office at Churchgate.

5. Visit Planet M at CST and Rhythm House at Kala Ghoda, to browse for CDs, with a visit to Strand Book Stall off P.M. road, in between !

6. Lunch on Naan and Chicken Afghani/Tikka Masala at my old favourite Balwas Restaurant, behind I.T. Office, New Marine Lines.

7. Gorge on Bhelpuri, Sev Batata Puri and Dahi Batata Puri at Vithal's, near New Empire Theatre.

8. Spend a few hours in the evening with my college friend, go nowhere in particular; and discuss cricket and Bollywood.

9. Visit all my relatives.

10. Watch the departure of the 2951 Rajdhani Express at Mumbai Central station; and wish I was on the train, instead of on the platform !

2) experience the traffic congestion and lack of road discipline

3) experience the roads itself. try crossing it and watch how others cross.

4) experience experiences at government offices

5) experience an after sales service of any product

6) experience an outburst of population all over.

7) experience queus at any giventime anywhere

8) experience the filth at dharavi.

9) experience as a witness to salman khan's accidents.

10) experience the the heat and ur sweat that it carries along, alongwith fatigue, stress, asthma, ... and whtevr etc's.

everything that you mentioned is possible in other parts of india except the trains and salman khan ....

I have to add Banganga to the list.. it's one of my favourite places .. a little piece of the quiet life in south bombay... It is so pretty and photogenic and lovely just for a quiet evening walk.
