Welcome Hotel in Fort - Is it a normal practice??

Hi, it's the first time for me to travel in India and I hope that somebody help the matter below...

Recently I made a reservation for a single non AC room with Welcome Hotel in Fort for my first night in India(next week). After sending my data etc. and made a reservation, the hotel increased the price twice in 10 days, as below.

Q1: Is it a normal practice in India?
Q2: Do you think that it's still worth staying, paying the increased price??

******************
[Jan. 24 - 28] Contacted the hotel & hotel replied attaching the tariff. Several communications between us and the hotel told me that my requested room available for my planed stays (Feb. 12). So I sent my personal data and requested the reservation confirmation. On the tariff (dated Jul. 1, 2007), the room is 780/- Inr + 4% Luxury tax (if applicable).

[Jan. 29] An email from the hotel: "Please note that from 1st Feb. 2008 our room rates are going to be increased. The room rate for the desired category will be 910/- Inr + 4% Luxury tax... Please confirm the price....."

On the same day, I replied it's OK. I thought it's strange not telling such price increase before making the reservation. But I also thought that they might review the price every 1/2 year...

[Jan. 30] An email from the hotel: "We are in receipt of your mail regarding room reservation for 12th February, 2008. Please note that as of this moment your booking for a non a/c room with shared bath is confirmed."

[Feb. 6] Received an email from the hotel: "Please note our revised tariffs (find attachments) and get back to us at the earliest to make the necessary changes or cancellations."

(On the new tariff, my room category is stated as 1090/- Inr + 4% Luxury tax)

******************
The increase might not be 'a lot' in the US price, but I staretd being afraid how farther they would go taking advantage of me...Any advice would be appreciated.

Unless you really want to stay there, I'd tell them to stick their new prices, you agreed on the basis of the old price, and if they don't like it, tough.

But that's just me....

Agree with Nick.

However,

I assume you haven't paid any advance money, right? Else, though I don't know this hotel, you may find it difficult getting a refund.

Thank you, Nick & Captain, for your suggestions. No, Captain, *fortunately* I have not paid them yet.

When I post the original sread, I also sent an email to the hotel asking wheather they'd have me stay at the old price. Yet, I have not received any reply from the hotel...(it's also strange considering their super quick past responses)

Well, I am flying to Mumbai next Monday. I canceled my reservation with the hotel and made one with another hotel nearby at 1,000 Inr. This time a payment was required, but I am happy to see "You do not have to pay to the hotel for your stay" on their receipt(Let's see if the hotel accepts it... ).
