Weekend Trips from Mumbai
Hey guys!
I will be arriving in Mumbai for a week of business, but I will arrive on the Friday night (sat 1am). I will have Sat, Sun, and Monday free. Does anyone have any suggestions of interesting things to do that would make a nice weekend trip away from Mumbai? I have heard that Elephanta is cool, but that isn't really a weekend thing is it? More like a day trip I heard. If possible I would like to get away for those few days before getting into the crazy city life. Thanks for any advice!

Actually, I thought Elephanta was a bit of a bore - once you get past all the stalls and all the people hastling you, it really isn't that spectacular... not that I can come up with any alternative interesting possibilities - I was only in Mumbai for a couple of days. i'm sure somebody else will be much more imaginative.

Hrm. Elephanta was listed as a "must see" in my guide books. Heh. Figures.
Is there any other interesting places to go around Mumbai? Or is it pretty much just the city? (Not that the city is not interesting... But I would like to get away if possible) |

Come on, Bill. Dharavi does not give feel of 'Treditional India'.
Saikyo : 3 days give you ample time to explore some forts in western Maharastra (of which Bombay is capital). Raigad is one such place. Here is a travel map of the state http://www.mapsofindia.com/maps/maha...tratourist.htm |

You could fly to Diu, one of our members "Indiawise" has a hotel there (Resort Hoka, there is a review here under Hotel Listings) and you would be guaranteed an interesting weekend. Many Bombayites fly into Diu for a weekend, primarily for the cheap beer but it is really worth a visit.

Check out Nashik and Trimbakeshwar.
Nashik is a town with innumerable temples, on the banks of the Godavari river. This is 165 kms. north of Mumbai and an easy week-end destination. Check out the Mukti Dham Temple, the Pandav Caves and the Jain caves. Visit the ghats on the banks of the Godavari at Panchavati in old Nashik for a feel of a "mini-Varanasi". 30 kms. from Nashik on the Agra highway is the village of Pimpalgaon Baswant, famous for its grapes. Sample some farm fresh grapes - the Green and Black varieties ! 35 kms. from Nashik, on a different route, is the temple town of Trimbakeshwar, with the source of the river Godavari not far off. It is an interesting if arduous trek up to the source! From Trimbakeshwar, you may return to Mumbai via Jawahar in the ghats, a very scenic route. No need to back track via Nashik. Hiring a vehicle from Mumbai will be ideal for the above trip.

Thanks so much everyone! I am intereted in Nashik. My South India book doesn't have it (mumbai is as north as it gets) so I'm off to the bookstore!!
One more question. Any suggestions of midrange places to stay in the Nasik area? Thanks for all your help! Last edited by saikyo : Jan 13th, 2004 at 10:13. |

Hotels at Nashik
Hotel Samrat near the old CBS (Central Bus Stand) and Hotel Pathik at Shalimar. Hotel Padma opposite the CBS is slightly cheaper.
