wedding shopping in mumbai
Hi all,
I am getting married in jan and due to work commitments, I will only get to arrive in India towards the end of dec and have exactly two days to shop for my bridal dress in mumbai! So, I need some help from you all because I am slightly stressed as to where to go/where to shop. I will stay in a south mumbai hotel for these two days. Ideally, I would love to buy a saree (wedding day) and lehenga (reception) which are classy (not garish) and in the range of 1000-2000 USD (upper limit). I did some searches and came up with the stores : Benzer and Sheetal for bridal shopping. Would you recommend these stores or are they just upmarket and too pricey for the things you get? In this forum (and what a great forum-- good job, mods!), I read that one can get bridal sarees in Santa Cruz. Is there a similar place for lehengas, where I have a broad range to choose for? Travel around Mumbai is not an issue. I would really really appreciate any feedback! - Stressed bride-to-be. |

anyways, I would say a budget of below USD 1000 should be kept in mind for both the things combined...!! infact that should be more than enough.. |

This might sound weired and a lot of hassle...but mind you Kolkatta is the place to be for such shopping..if you really can and if you know someone in Kolkatta, you might want to take a morning flight into Kolkatta and back in the evening or next day.. There would be a price difference of more than 50-70%..I say this because a Shervani that would have cost more than Rs.25K in Delhi was bought for Rs.10K in Kolkatta by one of my friends who recently got married...and Mumbai is any day more expensive than Delhi.. |

You should look fantastic on that budget.
But two days! Best make sure you have a good tailor, needle in hand, just waiting to your sari blouse and choli alterations. |

Paton in Vile Parle !!
I highly recommend Paton near Shiv Sagar Restaurant, Vile parle (East)(http://www.patonindia.com/) Huge and good collection. Ideal for one stop marriage shopping and in general mens shopping. Prices are reasonable too.
Tons of my frnds like you who have been been to india to get married in a short time visit this place. Another i would recommend is in pune on Lakshmi Road. Its a 5 Storey marriage shopping complex. Forgot the name !! |

Thanks a lot, all of you!
SA, I dont think I will get enough time to visit Kolkata. will have to make do with the mumbai shops (I know its expensive, but I guess, thats the price to pay for keeping everything till the last minute!). Nick, I really really hope I can find something which doesnt require a lot of alterations! Shutterbug, thanks for the advice. I will surely check them out. What a great forum!! ![]() |

Your blouse, at least, will have to be made... especially for such an event you would not want to wear one that did not match, I'm sure.
It is not impossible: can be done in an hour or so, you just have to have someone (preferably preplanned) who will drop everything to do a couple of hours work for you. |

It should not be a problem, most of the stores which sell this stuff will have some arrangement to get it done...generally within couple of hours..

any decent shop selling wedding kind of saris will have a tailor attached to them. If you buy the sari from them the tailor will immedietly come to the shop, take your measurements and deliver the blouse within half day/one day. In case of extreme urgency they can even deliver in 1-2 hrs.
that will not pose a problem. |

btw, what about Benzer/Sheetal? Their online wares look good...just dont know if the prices are due to designer labels or just good stuff? I am not into designer stuff at all; just want something simple but classy. |
