I would add to the list... walking along Marine Drive towards Nariman Point and catching sunset at the very end of Marine Drive, sitting on the edge, legs dangling by the rocks, waves occasionally crashing onto them... sorry for being so specific... that is actually my favorite spot

There is Mani Bhavan near Charni Road station if you are interested in Mahatma Gandhi.

Someone already mentioned Banganga near Walkeshwar, then about 3 miles (bus/taxi/long walk) north of there is Haji Ali mosque if you can make it inside depending on tide timing, or just see it from afar. Mahalakshmi temple is very close to Haji Ali. This is near Bombay Central station (bus/cab).

Bandra Bandstand (bus/auto from bandra station west side).. there is a peaceful church there (Fr Agnel) if you are looking for some tranquility. There is Toto's garage bar near Bandra stn (west) if you are looking for that.

If you have time/love nature walks, you can go to Sanjay Gandhi national park near Borivali station (east side) for half a day or more... there are some groups that do nature walks there (natureknights.com or bnhs.org) or you can go yourself to the Kanheri caves inside the park.

I second Elephanta caves... get off at Churchgate station and long walk/cab to Gateway of India... then take the ferry to Elephanta.

Tips for use of local train:
It is usually very crowded on weekdays, mornings going South (toward Churchgate) and evenings going North (toward Virar). Try to avoid these if possible. Sundays, weekday afternoons and traveling against the rush hour is much easier.

Briliant ..I love to see what others love about a place and enjoy seeing.
They are often more interesting and personal than just the tourist sights and therefore the sort of thing we love to do but would miss if we just looked at a guide book.
Thanks. and keep them comming please.

I agree.

What i enjoy to do when in Mumbai, is to walk around and suck in the atmosphere. Especially in Bandra

what i really miss is all the high rises and dreaming when i will have that penthouse on the top floor of a 30/40/50 floor high rise..... kinda reminds me of the jetsons and their high rise apartments.... ofcourse the rain brings me back down to the earth cause we cant really just elevate the apartment to escape the weather....

zsonia - I lived on Marine Drive circa 1970, and still remember the walk to Nariman Point (where I did exactly what you described!) as one of my fav things to do. At some point we'd take a short detour to K. Rustamji on D Road, Churchgate for yummy ice cream wafter sandwich from Parsi Auntyji.

I also enjoyed Malabar Hill. Nice view from Hanging Gardens there.
