Travelling to, in and around Mumbai?
Can anyone suggest a pleasant (but preferably not expensive) method of travelling between Delhi and Mumbai? I'm planning to go (roughly) Delhi - Jaipur - Udaipur - Ahmedabad - Rajkot - Diu - Mumbai and would like to go back a different way. An open jaw ticket/flying is at least as expensive as doing it overland, and much less fun, so I'd rather avoid it for the time being.
Also any recommendations of things to see or do in Mumbai would be great - I'm only really planning to go there because I'm a huge Bollywood fan and can't go to India again without at least *trying* to rub shoulders with Shahrukh Khan or Aishwarya Rai! |

well . . . train as far as Ahmedabad is very doable, then car or bus until Diu. From Diu, a flight to Mumbai will save many hours of wear and tear.
As far as different ways to return, you could check out Rathamore game park, Chitorgarh and Mt. Abu. Especially in the hot, Mt. abu is a bit cooler than anywhere else in W. India. If during the wet, Rathambore may be closed.

A train is the best option. On your way back from Mumbai to Delhi, travel by the fastest train between the cities, The Rajdhani Express.
Places to see in Mumbai are: 1. Colaba, Gateway of India, Museum, Ballard Pier, Hutatma Chowk, Churchgate, World Trade Centre, Marine Drive, Chowpatty, Malabar Hill-Kamla Nehru Park and Hanging Gardens, D.N. Road, CST station building, Mahatma Phule Market, Bhuleshwar, Haji Ali, Race Course and Mumbai Central Station building; all in South Mumbai. 2. Worli Sea Face and Dadar Chowpatty in Central Mumbai. 3. Band Stand, Land's end, Hill road and Linking Road; all at Bandra West in the suburbs. This is a great area for shopping. 4. Juhu Chowpatty, Esselworld Amusement Park and Sanjay Gandhi National Park; all in the suburbs. Do not miss the Bhel-puri, Sev-Puri and Paani Puri at Chowpatty/Juhu; and the Kulfi at Parsi Dairy, off Marine Drive. If you are interested in British period buildings and architecture, then you can easily spend four to five days in South Mumbai itself and cover the area on foot, taking one walk per day. Refer the excellent book "Fort Walks" by Rahul Mehrotra and Sharada Dwivedi. This will be available at any good bookshop in Mumbai. Mumbai is one place where you'll never get bored!

You can also get a train from Ahmedabad to Rajkot, then a bus/buses to Diu.
The plane from Diu to Mumbai (via Porbander with no extra cost) is US$100 single, the alternative bus or bus & train would take 24 hours. An alternative route back to Delhi could be via Ellora & Ajanta caves, then Jhansi (for Orchha), then Agra, and on to Delhi. Mumbai to Ellora/Ajanta Caves. There are overnight train options between Chalisgaon (from Ellora) or Bhusaval (from Ajanta) to Jhansi. Jhansi to Agra & Agra to Delhi are short daytime journeys, if you are going to go Jhansi - Agra - Delhi I will give additional advice for getting Sleeper class seats without having to book ahead. |

guerik all these posts contain good advice - there is an embarrassment of riches in Mumbai and its surrounding area. Don't miss Elephanta Island - you can catch a ferry from the Gateway of India for about 70/- - and it is about 10km each way.
The Rajdhani is a very comfortable train and gets into New Delhi station just after breakfast. I can highly recommend it. |

A couple of hours in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly the Prince of Wales Museum) is very interesting. Centrally located between the Colaba and Fort areas of Mumbai.

Thanks for all of your suggestions
![]() What is the best way to get from Diu to Mumbai other than the plane? That would blow my budget completely - trying to get by on as little as possible without getting flea-bitten/killed. |

You'll have to get to either Rajkot or Porbunder from Diu by road and then take a train to Mumbai.
