None of these sites give you rates that vary much from what makemytrip can give you.

I agree. India online travel sites in general are waaaay behind the US ones in terms of usability.

travel guru is the one i saw advertised. indian sites are horrible. i dont think people here have any idea or care what a consumer wants it seems. almost all travel sites are simple and quick to load.
here its the other way round for some reason.

my good friends father is a major independent travel agent and i have been pestering them to go online but they dont listen.

Why doesn't IM start something like this when it is what is needed very much in a country like India and especially for the travellers coming here from other countries? I am sure it would work out well if the site was fast, easy to operate and gave the most comprehensive listings from all the airlines combined and not just a "sorry there is no flight from Mumbai to Khajuraho" instead of giving the right connections to get there by multiple flights or whatever. It would mean more work for the site managers but then at least one would get a quality site doing things that the traveller wants most.

Cheers,
Aadil.

that's way out of the scope of canned software like vBulletin which is driving this site.

At the moment I'm writing code to simplify the Indian train system. It will include clickable maps and provide up to date schedule information. Next I'll be working on the airlines system, takes quite a bit of fiddling since there appears to be no centralized booking system (like SABRE) for all the airlines operating in India. Finally I'll be consolidating the bus transit info.

The goal is to allow someone to plug in two cities, get Rail/Flight/Bus comparisons all lined up with travel times.

actually i think AMADEUS is a centralized booking system followed most popularly here. im not sure you can access it without the relevant royalty or expenses and the IATA requirements.

Aadil, the problem is that the sheer cost of setting up something which will run smoothly, be accurate, easy to navigate and well planned.

with $10million in funding and $1-2million in revenues makemytrip still cant do anything above what a college grad would.

I have been thinking of doing exactly that. I am providing a similar service through the other site I have, but that's more of an affiliate program.

Do you think an online booking engine would be popular with IM users? It seems that most people on the site prefer to book directly with the hotels byt calling them up or emailing them.
