I'm arriving in "Mumbai" on the Garib Nawaz Express which stops at Kalyan Junction @ 21:40, Bhiwandi Road @ 22:13, Vasai Road @ 23:00. Everything's all booked and I can't realistically change my arrangements and get a train that actually goes to Mumbai (my bad, RTFM etc).
Which station is my best bet for catching a taxi to the international airport from & how much (roughly) should it cost. Am I better off taking the suburban railway from Kalyan Jn instead(I can't find a timetable online for it)?
I'm travelling with my wife and 2 young children and baggage so I'd prefer to avoid chaotically over-crowded trains if possible.

I don't know about Kalyan Jn. but from Vasai Road it will approximately take 1 hour to reach international airport by suburban train ( 45 min upto Andheri by train + 15 min taxi ride till airport) sub-urban trains will be running after each 10-15 minutes ...& as you will be going towards Mumbai @ nightime there'll be no rush in trains ...either from Kalyan or Vasai(at that time rush will be in suburban trains coming from Mumbai)

Local trains are the fastest

Kalyan Stn is on the eastern side where `central line' locals ply between CST (formerly Victoria Terminus) and Kalyan & beyond. Vasai is on the western side and part of the `western line' where local train ply between churchgate and virar. Bhiwandi lies on line connecting thest two stations. This line is not connected to any city and is merely there for trains that bypass Mumbai city.
For a local train Vasai is the best option as the airport is close to Andheri station which is on the western line and 45 minutes away from Vasai. The only concern would be the late hour (which could turn even later if the train is delayed). Make sure to travel in a populated compartments as there have been robberies on trains. From Kalyan, you could take the central railway train upto Ghatkopar or Kurla and take a cab to the Sahar international airport. But that is a slightly longer distance than the Andheri- Sahar Intl Airport distance. At that late hour it is not worth even considering a cab from Vasai\Kalyan. The fare will be 10 times the rail ticket, it will take much longer and you will have to bargain hard with the driver since they are out of city limits and only those with Mumbai permits can take you to the airport.

Thanks guys.
It appears the suburban railway closes from midnight til 3am. I think I will alight at Kalyan Junction and catch a taxi from Ghatkopar. I don't want to spend 3 hrs at Vasai Road if my train arrives late.

When is your flight back?

You may be cutting it quite close if your flight is say at 2 am. If the train is delayed 3-4 hours which would not be unexpected if the train is travelling a great distance, (from Bangalore)you will arrive at kalyan say about 00:40 - 1:40 am.

I typically allow 24 hours before I fly back overseas so the kids and I can have a good night's rest.
