Maybe you are mistaken? Most people started with quoting 13/km.
And it was 15 hours, and a few hundred rupees in taxes, which he paid. UP/Haridwar is difficult without that, specially in a SUV.

Cheers,

taxes are fine..both ways up and down should not be more than Rs.200 OR 300.

I am saying because we hired a Tavera to go to Khatu Shyam Ji.. and Salasar Bala ji...the entire trip is 800 Kilometers...

We start at 10 pm and come back by 5-6 pm next day...

However we pay Rs.6 or 6.25 per Km for non AC plus Rs.100 to the driver for the night...we provide food to driver with us as a courtesy...

Since we are regular and people in our group hire from that person almost every week that is the reason he gives a bit cheap rate..however even if we hire from an unknown vendor then also the going rate is Rs.6.50 for Qualis and Max. Rs.7 for Tavera..

Maybe vendors in South Delhi and in tourist areas are making Merry at the cost of more affluent customers..!!

I wasn't going to name names, but yes it was Mumbai Magic. It appears that they provide a very professional service, but I just couldn't justify the price, works out at just under AUD$400 for two people. And after more research, we figure we can do it ourselves using ordinary taxis and walking around.

I have talked to the lady who runs it and she seems to be pretty good about what she gives as information and handouts but still the price is a bit high though not too much for business people who want a short summary of the best places to see in the shortest possible time. So I guess if they have that kind of money to pay for a short introduction to Mumbai I guess that is fine since they get airconditioned comfort and a packed lunch/snack along with the handouts and a personal english speaking guide.

Cheers,
Aadil.

Yes, as I said, they were very professional, but we are going to be in Mumbai for 5 nights so we will have plenty of time to experience it by ourselves. I agree, for someone with very limited time and the $s, they would be a great alternative.

Check out what I have mentioned in one of the earlier posts (#36) about what to do in Mumbai on your own without using a guide. It would be a great way to see the city on your own and at your own pace too. It is not too expensive to go around the city by taxi or most of the places on foot so you don't really need much transport too. If you want any more details please feel free to ask, will be a pleasure to be of any help.

Cheers,
Aadil.

Thanks Aadil, I have already read it, printed it out and it is included in our background papers in our itinerary. It was very useful and encouraged us to do it on our own.

In fact, since becoming part of the IM community I feel more comfortable each day that India is possible without too much interference from tour companies.

But I must admit we are still using a car and driver for the Rajasthan section.

Many thanks again to all IM's, and I am sure I still have many more questions to ask, but hopefully will be able to be more helpful to new IM's after we complete out trip.
