I've been to Mumbai many times now and the tariff card doesn't seem to be the problem.

I got a cab once and at the end of the short journey the charge was about Rs300, it was a small amount on the metre, but it all checked out on the tariff card, the scam was.....the driver had been driving around with the meter running, then he notices an unsuspecting tourist, picks them up and they pay the for all the driving he's done.

Since then I always 'flag' the meter myself (as do the locals), but twice since the same thing has been tried.

Another one that I really don't understand, I got a cab from VT to the airport, the driver seemed really keen, I noticed the meter was already running so I turned it off then back on, he was still happy, he was really friendly all the way to the airport, then he showed me the tariff card and the meter reading, it came to Rs550, I can only think that he drove the longest route possible to get to the airport.

This has happened to me as well..at least I believe that I was conned..

But this is something that happens almost all around the globe...and unfortunately people like us can take not enough precautions to avoid this..because whatever you do you cannot be aware of all the routes of a city you have not lived in..

Yes, too true.

The thing that really bugged me was that he was so friendly, I was thinking "what a wonderful man" and was pleased that this man was the last man I'd see before the airport.

This changed to "Damn, I've been had again".

But, as I've said many times, I'd rather be conned this way than any other way, he was so friendly that I must have missed going around VT 20 times.

We should have realised when he said "this is Thane University."

I thought that the tariff card will be useful for me as i was told to negiotate with the driver before i even get into the taxi..having the card would help with prices.

Maybe I'm thinking of a different card (I've not checked the card in the link), the card I'm thinking of is just a conversion card, the metres are old and the fare for a journey will be about Rs6, the tariff/conversion card only tells you how much needs to be paid, for example...Rs6 = Rs56 (not a real example).

It won't tell you how much it costs to get from A to B.

I've probably used about 20 taxi's in Mumbai, and only once have they not used the meter. (except pre-paid)

But, as I said earlier, they can still use the meter, show you the tariff card and still con you, I guess the taxi drivers of the world always win.

Just an after thought....in those 20 times I've probibly been overcharged by about Rs800 in total, 2 of the times totaled about Rs400, so the other 18 times were really only a few rupees, though about half the time there was no attempt to overcharge.
