Hi, and welcome to IndiaMike.

The question gets asked quite a bit, so try and search the site for it. If you scroll down to the bottom of this page, you'll find a list of "similar threads." Opening any of those will again give you similar threads at bottom, etc. ad infinitum.

Tailor in Mumbai

I highly recommend Joe Goes at the junction of Chira Bazar and Princess Street next to the Fire Temple. Tel: 22075068. Sunday closed. Joe usually comes in after 12 noon and stays till around 7pm. He has stitched fine quality hand finished suits, trousers and shirts for our extended family with a perfect fit and finish every time. Also very reasonable. People ask if his suits are "Italian" suits, so I expect that is a compliment.

Bumping the thread. I would also like to find a good tailor to copy a western style cocktail dress I have in matte jersey (if you know the fabric). Not sure if all tailors would do women's clothes and/or western style clothes.

The similar threads didn't seem relevant when I read them.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hello Renee
If you read the post just above yours re Tailor Joe Goes, I just got a western cocktail dress stitched through him for one of our friends in the UK, she sent a sample and he bought the fabric and had it made up through a lady who specialises in this stuff, within a few days !! We just sent the dress out today, it looked exactly like the original. You could try him, he is sincere and will not overcharge, also he will help you with the fabrics as Mangaldas market is just around the corner from his shop.

Joe Goes used to charge INR 1500 for a 2 piece mens suit with hand finishing. It may be slightly more now, you could call him and check. If you want a hand stitched lapel, Italian style, it may cost about INR 100 more. He will give you as many fittings as you want, and also try and complete it fast if required.

Fabrics of course will be extra at actual cost, which you can purchase to your choice at the nearby Mangaldas Market, or bring your own from wherever you prefer. Joe will tell you how much fabric and lining you require.

See post No.3. His shop [originally his late father's] is called Reliance Tailors, its on JSS Rd [Old name Girgaum Rd] just outside the Wadia Parsi Colony, next to the Parsi Fire Temple, and very near [1 min walk] to the junction of Princess St.[also known as Shyamaldas Gandhi Rd] and JSS Rd. The area is Chira Bazaar. Tel: 91 22 22075068 Joe is a jovial, laid back Goan, he comes in late around 12 noon and stays till 7pm. Sundays closed. Call him around 2pm and fix a time so that he will expect you. He does a brilliant job on mens trousers too.

Raymond's shop is a good one for having a suit made. Raymonds is a chain store with fixed prices and they do good stitching. I have a kashmiri-wool-polyester mixed suit made about a month ago and it turned out really well -but i paid approx. 13k rupees.

But compared to the Indians on the street a more expensive option. You can have shirts made everywhere -> as long as you insist on decent stitching, it will work out. The cheapest option is to buy the fabric yourself on the Mangaldas market and bring it to one of the stitchers, as most of the time they lack a wide assortiment of fabric.
