You can try the street food of Bade Miya at Tulloch Road, in a lane behind Cafe Mondegar next to Regal Cinema. It is available only in the evenings till very late at night but not at lunch time!!!
Cheers, Aadil.

Second Bade Miya's
Great place (and obviously exceedingly popular with locals). It's signposted but that's easy to miss; you can't miss the dozens of tables on the street though, set around their one or two kitchen stands. They set up stall at around 18:00 I think; go on till something like midnight-01:00 if not later, indeed (possibly the later on weekends).Predominantly non-veg, but they serve some vegetarian dishes as well. There's a bar (and wine shop at the back) called Gokul's on this same street, almost opposite them. It's a nice place to grab a beer (and again something of a local institution I think), if somewhat grungy as such places tend to be; does not half-bad and affordable food as well, btw. Beers and drinks here are quite a tad more affordable than in some of the more touristy places in the area. Anar, Lonely Planet '07 lists one Kailash Parbat, 5 Sheela Mahal, 1st Pasta Lane, is that what you mean? Described by them as "nothing fancy, but a Mumbai legend." Sounds good; can't say I know it, alas. Looks to be a while down south along Colaba Causeway from the main action, past Colaba Market. I seem to recall there used to be quite some street (food) vendors in the side streets off the northern end of Colaba Causeway in this area btw, but didn't notice much of them earlier this year. Is/was that impression correct?

Kailash Parbat at Colaba was supposed to have had a problem with the locals staying in the building they are housed in since the kitchen was illegally built so there was a stay on the restaurant running a few months ago, not sure if they have started again. It has a nice variety of Sindhi food and sweets available.
Cheers, Aadil. |

At the risk of being hung by some Bade Miya fanatics:
For some, the quality there has gone down in inverse proportion to the the increase in price. The chicken baida roti (chicken and egg roti, an open flat fried concoction) is still stellar, but the roomali rolls are usually not up to spec and the tikka's in them quite spongy. There is a restaurant called Baghdadi in the same street, 10 feet away. Try their chili chicken fry (which is actually a medium texture gravy) with khameri roti (afghan bread types). The quality is in inverse proportion to the price also but in the other direction. Top it off with a caramel custard. Order it first because they tend to run out. A great place close to Colaba for street food (rolls, chicken, mutton bhuna) is Ayub's which opens at night. It is in the lane next to Rhythm House (Near Jehangir Art Gallery) and a few doors from the blue synagogue. Try the rolls and the mutton/chicken bhuna For drinks, Gokul, mentioned by machadinha is a legend by itself. It is a man's place, they type where you can see burly guys wearing shades in the dim atmosphere polishing of their drinks. Remarkably cheap compared to other places. Zero ambience (err...people are the ambience) and straight liquor. Nothing but net! On a humorous note, Gokul opened a counter next door called Gokul Health Food (or some variation of such)...Dont see too many customers in the new venture ![]() |

Great info genesis, thanks! Makes sense what you said about Bade Miya - though I haven't tried it recently, but was planning to in my trip in Jan. Some times, really popular places can tend to live on their name alone.
Funny about Gokul opening a health shop! Hilarious in fact. I think I've been to Gokuls quite often - a long time ago, after work. IIRC they have an upstairs with a fairly low ceiling - or maybe it just felt that way after several drinks - but generally a pretty hardcore place, unless you happen to be a hardcore drinker too, which I was in those days Quote:
