Have been so much wanting to spend some time at the Changi Airport smoking room enjoying my clove but my just-in-time arrival at the terminal never let me indulge on that and my flights are never delayed!

Smoking not allowed at public places in Delhi????? Where do you folks smoke in that case? I know it was banned in Maharashtra too but it did not take any ground. I do not think it will EVER! But of course you have to be care of such grumpy old men.

I have experienced cigs make a great way in striking a conversation with (smoker)strangers. It just starts gleefully and is less irritable for the second person than a smoke-less approach like "hey there...this is ME...just arrived here...first time in India". He might just give a frowned look and say "So??!!!"

Offering a stick or borrowing his/her lighter automatically sets the pace to have a nice talk. And may be dig out some information you want.

On March 6 i spent 12 ( yes 12) hours in Bombay airport on my way out of in India. I had no problem smoking outside, at first i had to show my ticket when i was getting in but after a few ins and outs the security guards were recognizing me and smiling when seeing my cigarette. The first time they asked " why do you need to go outside? We have a smoking lounge, go there!" But i answered that i am here for 12 hours and going outside is the only thing that will keep me sane. They laughed and there were no problem. Also, since they will take your lighters during check in, you will need to ask for a light someone local outside the door and it is a way to start a chat.

For emergencies, take a couple of anti-smoking patches with you; I recommend this highly for that long plane ride, and if you are going to be on any excruciatingly long train rides.

Yes it is banned but thats more on paper than anything else now , its not going to very easy to implement something like this in India...... i have been to 2 restaurants this week which had "no smoking" signs outside but when asked i was told 'its only for show'....and was promptly given an ashtray :-)

Cops go around smoking all the time...not very uncommon to see a cop taking in a few nice drags while directing traffic

I liked the way that inside Kathmandu airport there were No Smoking signs everywhere, but not only were the staff smoking, there were giant sand ashtrays and lighters on string provided for them!

Delhi International Airport has some sort of a 'business class lounge' where you can smoke, you can get there for a fee of $20 or so. But that's after you passed customs. Before that, if you didn't bring your cigarettes with you, no way you can buy them anywhere near the airport. I myself arranged with the taxi driver to drive to the convenience store and bring me a pack of marlboros, for Rs500 total. I then sat on the floor across the entrance to the airport for several hours, smoking. Inside the airport and apart from the smoking area at the lounge, there is no smoking areas at all and personally I wouldn't venture smoking anywhere. Cigarettes and lighters get confiscated at the customs. Same situation at the domestic Delhi airport, but there you can smoke at the cafe if you buy coffee or something. Same situation in Amritsar, can smoke outside after you pass the customs. Actually Amritsar is much more convenient than Delhi in many ways, the airport is smaller and customs works faster since not many foreigners are entering the country there. Certainly recommend to anyone who wants to explore Himachal Pradesh.

Just flew back from Mumbai and people were definitely smoking at the bar outside the Clipper Lounge in departures.

Outside International & Domestic terminals is OK

I work at a UK airport and 4 yrs ago was watching a Spanish pilot doing his paperwork in the cockpit, window open, and flicking ash from a cigarette out of the window - His aircraft was being refuelled at the time !!!!!!

Thumbs up Smoking at Mumbai Airport

We were in Mumbai about a month ago and when we were leaving we had to go domestic first to catch our international flight from Chenni, but what I found was that when you go through customs they take your lighter, which is fine because there is no where to smoke in the domestic area anyway and its not like you can get back outside, so there you have to deal with that. In the international terminal I am not sure where or if you can smoke but we are going back in October so I will find out then. (I will also pack a packet of matches as they dont take them. Also smoking around Mumbai is fround apon as a few years ago they passed a law stating that you can smoke indoors not out doors, but if you are a western national you can bet your life on it that if you smoke out side not one person will say dont do that. I found that the VITS Hotel has a indoor bar which you can smoke in also they have smoking floors, the only place you cant smoke is in the lobby. Most places in Mumbai will will let you smoke indoors.

Hope this helps.
