I'll be in mumbai for four nights in october. I was there for one day and one night last year but I was with my son so we had an early night. I'd love to sample some night-life this time. Where would it be safe to venture out on my own? Any ideas/tips?

Mumbai is generally safe to venture out in. You have not mentioned where in Mumbai you will be staying. The best places for nightlife are around the Colaba, Churchgate, Bandra West and Juhu areas although pubs and bars of various types have sprouted all over Mumbai.
