Silk salwar Kameez in or near Santa Cruz.

As some of you may have read in this thread: Thread ceremony in Mumbai. I'm in dire need of a silk salwar kameez, and have only 3-4 days to get it after my arrival in Mumbai, so I thought I better ask some locals...
Can anybody recommend a tailor or a retail outlet for a ready made suit preferably in or near Santacruz where I might find something suitable? Also, I have very little idea of how much it is, so I'd like to know which price range I'm looking at.
Thanks ever so much

summer is hitting mumbai with a vengeance!
silk in this weather - no-no... besides, when you perspire - outfit not looking nice

why dont you get yourself to FabIndia - there is one on Pali Hill in Bandra [West] not too far from Santacruz.
here you will find yourself a range of evening/morning cotton, bright and/or pastel shaded indian outfits - some which has lil embroidery as well.
good - more than good enough for formal wear.
if you absolutely want silk stuff - they have them as well

Mmm, great. The Danish climate is so cold that I think it'll be one week in Mumbai before my bone marrow has reached an acceptable temperature

I'm sure you're the expert, so I won't argue with you, I'm just surprised and a little bewildered... Silk normally has a reputation for regulating body temperature, or am I mistaken? What do you mean it won't look nice? Are you saying it'll become so damp it'll cling to me?

Great, sounds just like the kind of place I'm looking for. How far is it, 15 - 30 min by auto or something like that? Thanks.

yup - the silk clings unto you when meeting sweat - and the feeling not nice
silk dont breathe, hence it does not soak the sweat - unlike cottons.

distance:
peak traffic - santacruz to pali hill about 25 mins.
otherwise - 10-15 mins.

read the fabindia thread - its around SOMEWHERE
even if you dont find the thread - its a guarantee that you will find a huge selection of outfits there
its a store that has men's clothing too - kurta's and full/ half-sleeved shirts - but all indian weaved cottons/colours/prints.

happy shopping - and let us know what you bought!

Hello Briped,

I have read your Thread ceremony thread. so I think you want something a little more festive then normal cotton ones.

There are many shops @ sanatcruz station ( west).
the one that I can reccomend is Friendship, they have ready mades and fabrics. they have more expensive stuff but good quality . There are other shops in the same line/ lane as friendship that are equally good

Tell them to show you pure silk crepe/raw Cotton self prints with no / little embroidery. I have at times brought cotton stuff from Friendship that looked chic enough to wear to family / religious gatherings. So that should be okay. they also do alterations.

Sheetal also has a branch at santacruz station if thats your budget.

hope this is of help.

Santacruz West market is a shoppers dream - plenty of shops and stalls at all possible budgets in the 2 road from SV Rd going upto and coming from the railway station. There are also several boutiques in the smaller lane connecting these 2 roads, and in adjoining Hasnabad lane. Some of the better known stores where you will get pure silk in addition to every other fabric are Friendship, Amrapali, Arun, Seasons, Bawree and many, many more shops whose names I cannot immediately recall - believe me you cannot miss them. You will also get a whole range of matching accessories. If in the off chance, you are not satisfied with Santacruz, then take a look at the multitude of stores at Linking Rd, just a short taxi or auto ride away.

I think you should go for silk; this is no time for comfort. Nobody else will be comfortable either, but you'll all look lovely.

Wonderful The Santacruz west market is literally speaking a 10 min walk from where we'll be staying. Just across the railway bridge. I've even been there before, just not looking for clothes so I didn't notice any of the shops you mention.
If I feel brave enough I might post a pic of what I ended up getting. Oh, I quite fancy the churidars, but would they be suitable for the ceremony - and for me? (47 years). Thanks so much for all your help

Dont worry I am sure they will suit you. age is not the matter be sure to choose something in light colours that go with your skin tone especially since this is a day time ceremony. The light colour / sober design style will suit your age and also the weather / day time thing.

have fun shopping how I wish I was in your place.

Thing is, light colours tend to not suit me at all. I'm very light with golden'ish hair, especially after a long Scandinavian winter, but light colours and pastels...If I wear those I'm sure a couple of helpful and concerned stall holders will rush me of to the nearest hospital Really bright colours don't suit me either, so I always look with great envy at those who're able to wear them. Dark green, blue, maroons are much more my 'thing'.

The colours were suggested more in keeping with the indian summer - lighter cooler. go ahead with the darker colours too & I am sure you will be a hit at the function..

TD
Dont worry, you will get every colour under the sun in India and more particularly in the multitude of shops at S'cruz west market. And the shopkeepers will be more than happy to assist you in your choice. Do not be surprised if they pull out the whole store in their effort to tempt you to buy. And always ask for a discount. Dark gr, bl, maroons are popular silk colours. Happy shopping and do post your results !

I'd say FabIndia is great shopping for a westerner, I love it, but not as dressy as you are talking about. You can find fine cotton clothes to wear every day, during your trip and at home.

I am older than you and I think churidar is fine. And usually looks better to westerner than salwar. A less "foreign" line to figure out in relaiton to your own proportions etc.

The longer the top/kameez/kurta, the dressier and less girlish - i.e. I am recommending something longish with churidar. And if you don't know how to wear the dupatta/stole, get some advice in the shop, there are zillions of ways to wear it.

I love these clothes, I envy you actually going shopping in India.

I went to a dressy Indian wedding in February and loved it. Both my outfits involved churidar and I was very happy with them.

I'd love to see a picture of what you buy - if you don't want to post your own photo, please take a picture of the outfit on a hangar!!
