"Sightseeing" in Mumbai

How does this sounds for things to see and do in Mumbai?

• Mani Bhavan - Mahatma Ghandi museum

• Bangganga Tank

• Breach Candy – Mahalaxmi temple

• Haji Ali’s Mosque

• Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat

• Kalbadevi and Bhuleshwar – the bazaars

Which area is the best to stay in - Colaba or Fort area?

Don't miss the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya Museum. Its located between the fort and colaba areas.
I like staying in the fort area better than colaba: less touristy stuff, better food and shopping. Its only a few rupees/10 minutes to take an autorickshaw to colaba from the fort area.

i'd recommend doing elephanta island too. its really quite amazing. take advantage of the official guides there: it's quite a short tour, and you'll get much more out of it

The walk from Nariman Point to Chowpatty along Netaji Subhash Marg ( popularly called Marine Drive or Queen's necklace) is great !

The suburbs of Bandra West (Land's end, Hill Road, Linking Road), Santacruz (Juhu beach) and Borivali (Sanjay Gandhi National Park) are not to be missed, either !

For that itinerary I would suggest taking one taxi for the whole outing. This should cost no more than the sum of the legs plus a waiting fee (20 R/ per hour?), which rate you can figure in advance with the driver.

Having one driver laid on generaly makes for a better day.

Autorickshaws / Three wheelers are not permitted in South Bombay.
