Agreed about Cage - way too wooden in his acting - almost expressionless.

Also agree that I hope it does come to the big screen soon(ish).

Cheers

This just in from my Bollywood Page 3 source: They cut the book way down and made a love story out of it with some of the Muslim Mafia story line. Also Johnny D wanted too much money, also they changed the directors. also some problems with the writer Roberts. It may not be made.

I think Sean Penn would suit the role - visually.

None of the people mentioned above have any similarity looks wise towards Roberts. If you look at his picture in the book, you'll see he looks very similar to Liam Neesan. So Liam gets my vote. Johnny Depp. No Way!

But I'm sure Roberts would be very flattered to have Depp play him, as Roberts ain't the most handsome man in the world. No similarity what so ever! But that's Hollywood, where they used to have whites playing Indians and Orientals in the movies years ago.

Another idea - I could see Tim Roth playing Roberts - he is tough, a brilliant actor, has the same heavy eyelids and high forehead (just looked at a photo on you-tube of the author).

Agreed, that's why I thought Penn would be better, he has that rough kind of face, been around the block a few times as well as a kind of vulnerability. Mm Liam would be kind of interesting.

Liam is too old. Penn, too stiff. But, why does the actor have to look like the author? The only people who know what the writer looks like are the people who've read the book which will comprise a very small percentage of the box office. I think the actor should fit the screenplay, not the author.

Depp owns the rights to the movie. It was originally going to be directed by Mira Nair but there seems to be another director involved now. Don't know who it is.

When I first heard that they wanted to make a movie out of Shantaram, I tought about Heath Ledger to play the lead... Sadly it will not happen.
I don't really see Depp in it, but I had the same reaction for a lot of the movies he did, and I always thought he was brilliant after seeing them.

No arguments here! If he don't get it, he should at least get hired as a "train consultant".

Call me gullible (You're Gullible!) but I was completely suckered in by the book. It was a great disappointment to find it was fictitious, based on an amalgam of characters. Am I alone in being so naive? I found the book engrossing and couldn't put it down. The characters were so well drawn, in my opinion, that they were real to me.
BTW, GDR looks a bit less like a girl on his home page: http://www.shantaram.com/

I also think heath ledger would do a good job, but i still think depp would be the best choise.

How 'bout Willem Dafoe? He got a rough face and I think he looks kind of good in long hair.
