If you want to relax, chill etc within mumbai go to

Aksabeach - Malad, northen suburb of mumbai - usually visited for day picnic
Madh island - off malad take a ferry across from manori at malad ,
gorai beach - north mumbai within 2 hrs travel from south mumbai.

a little away
Arnala beach also in the north of mumbai is about 2.5 hrs away by local train from Chruchgate. get off at Virar - the last station on the route get arickshaw/ bus to arnala. Many resorts where you can spend the day
Kelve beach - palghar - north of mumbai get to virar as above then get a shuttle train further to palghar alternate take any long distance train from bombay central headed for vapi, surat or ahmedabad in gujrat, get off at Palghar - Rs. 10 by share rickshaw to kelve beach Try the kelve beach resort.

Further away
Beaches south of Mumbai -
Alibaug, Kihim , Murud, Kashid - take a ferry from gateway of india , bhau cha dhaka in south mumbai to alibaug and then rickshaw to any of the baove beaches.

Other options
Hill stations -
Lonavala / Khandala - on mumbai pune route, take any train headed to Pune from Chatrapati shivaji terminus (VT) - you need to book in advance for weekends and get off 2 hrs later at any of the two. dont forget to sample the batata wadas at karjat station on the way and chocolate fudge at coopers in lonavala

Matheran - Take the local train from VT towards Karjat, get off at Neral station. ( about two hrs away) take a share taxi - Rs. 50 per person to Dasturi naka - then walk, ride a horse or take the lazy way out into matheran - the only hill station without any mode of transport.

also
Silent Valley resort at Manor north of mumbai

also
water kingdom - water park at esselworld
Great escape - Virar
Suraj Water park - thane,
Tikuji ni wadi - thane
Kumar water park - lonavala

hope you have a good time
