Place to stay in Mumbai with kids
Place to stay in Mumbai with kids
Can anyone suggest a good place to stay in Mumbai for a family with 3 children aged 13, 12 and 9 years?
We have been to India before (me several times) and would like a comfortable place for the first couple of nights. A business or tourist class hotel would be fine, as long as it is clean. The kids like swimming so a pool would be great.

The Marriot Juhu is good, but can be expensive.
Sun n Sands Juhu also good and reasonably priced.

Thanks everyone. What about places that have lots of character, like small heritage hotels or art deco buildings? When I was last there in '93 I stayed in a run-down mansion on the foreshore of Colaba. I'm sure that's all mega-developed now.

We stayed at Sun n sand, Juhu and are planning on staying there on our next trip through mumbai in Dec. Rooms are good and there is a pool. The hotel backs right onto Juhu beach.
I posted this elsewhere and then found this thread. My bad for not looking harder. We are planning a trip to Mumbai in December (over Christmas) for the first time. Do you think we should hire a guide? If so does anyone have suggestions for where to find a good one. Haven't booked a hotel or plane tickets yet, but have been online and as of a couple of months ago looked like there wasn't a mad rush to travel in that time frame. Would appreciate very much advice from recent travelers in particular. I have noticed that some of the most informative posts are years old. Makes me a bit wary. Thanks to anyone wishing to help.
Bentley's hotel is a nice budget hotel, placed in Coloba, i stayed there twice and both time were great, they have 3 or 4 buildings placed within walking distance to eachother, som are boviously not as nice as others.

In my opinion, there is no need to hire a guide as there is not really that much to see here in Mumbai, requiring the services of a guide. If you want you can hire a taxi for the day to make the travelling a bit more comfortable. Local AC Indica type vehicle for 8 hours will cost approx. Rs 1000/- The drivers will usually know what is where, and if they do not, they will ask and find out.
Foreign visitors usually like the Colaba area with its many stalls and hallmark cafe's along the Colaba Causeway. You can also do a half day trip to Elephanta island by taking the ferry from the Gateway of India jetty. Very close to Colaba Causeway.
If you are staying at Colaba, you may want to visit the Girgaum Chowpatty beach - assuming you are not visiting Goa, or you are not from a country which has better beaches.
You can also visit the ancient Kanheri caves located within the Sanjay Gandhi National Park at Borivili.
If you have kids with you, they may like to visit Esselworld at Gorai along the coast.
The latter two places are closer to the Juhu area than to Colaba.

I just got back. You are right. Colaba seems the same as 18 years ago.I ended up staying at The Emerald in Juhu. Although I would not stay at Juhu again, since downtown is much more interesting, the people a the Emerald were very nice. The service was good and it is the best family accommodation I have ever had in India. We had a suite with two large bedrooms, a large dining table, a lounge, a divan to sleep two (converting to a sofa during the day) and a proper kitchen with cooking facilities and a full sized fridge. At Rs 10,000 per day it is a lot for India, but I thought good value for what it was in Mumbai. It had 3 televisions and 2 safes, 2 bathrooms and lots of storage. It was really an apartment. It was a bit old, but clean and well maintained. It could very comfortably sleep 6 adults. A good buffet breskfast was also included.
