Paying Guests/Girls Hostel in Mumbai

Hi there!

I would be joining one of the Educational Institutes in Mumbai on 12th of April. Im totally new to Mumbai so have nil information about the same.

I'm looking for Girls Hostels/PGs in a safe residential area around Dadar east, Santa Cruz, Bandra or closer.. But, since ma course is only for 2months, I'm unable to find the same. Im also thinking of YWCA, but it's working out quite expensive without food.

Would be really really glad if someone could provide me the contacts regarding the same. Thanks!!

Dear BreadCrumbs,

It is better to Have an enquiry in your institute about pg accomodation for ladies.
One of my freind used to stay at Sher-e-punjab,Andheri east, but it would be very far from Dadar or
bandra ie, you may need to catch a train to reach your place .
Yes, it is quiet expensive compare to Coimbatore or any other city prices but as
you are new to mumbai trust only your institute management.

have a happy stay at mumbai.

Thanks,
CSReddy.

Yes, consult your institute for options and see where other fellow students are staying.

I will be very surprised if you get a passable hostel/pg for a cheaper rate compared to YWCA.

You can consider YWCA in andheri west. Where is your institute?

CSReddy & Nayan.... Thank U so much for the reply!!

It's a photography institute in Dadar. My husband's not in the country so he won't be able to join me to assist fixing up my stay or to guide me on the local transport. So he's all okie only for YWCA. As it's well known and safe. So, Im actually considering finalising YWCA but just thought it would be better to have options.

N yes it is, to go with someone trustworthy than searching around. Thanks again!!

N I did check with the Institute if they have any in-house hostel facility or know of any contacts. Unfortunately, they don't have any. ( Im not familiar with local transport at all, never have taken it anywhere but considering ma stay in Mumbai, guess that would be ma least expensive option. N since the place is all new, I would also need assistance with local transport incase someone knows of it.. sigh*

Are you talking about the YWCA international centre in Fort area? That is going to be very expensive over two months but the commute to dadar will be easier as you will be travelling in the opposite direction of the majority of commuters.

I have stayed in YWCA in Andheri . Its nothing posh but its safe and quite clean and the location is good(about 5 mins on auto from andheri station). There are dorm accomodation(which you wont get for a short stay) and two seater(with attached bath) and single seater rooms(with attached bath).
List of YWCAs
http://www.ywcaic.info/ctclocat.htm

Give the Andheri place a call and see if they can accomodate you. They are usually full.

The easiest way of travel would be taking
1. a auto to the andheri station
2. An andheri local to Dadar(all trains will go to dadar but the andheri local will be the only one you will be able to get on if you are not used to mumbai rush hour trains)
3. Take an auto from dadar station to institute

If you are uncomfortable with this journey then try to get something in dadar itself.

Wow! Thanks a lot Nayan.. I got in touch with d Andheri YWCA n have finalized ma two sharing accommodation for now. Glad to hear that's its clean n neat, approx 5mins travel n all which is very important for me.. N not being posh is kind of a concern but would be able to adjust I hope cos when nothing works out, being safe becomes a priority!! haha.... Now, time to figure out n concentrate on the local transport front.... uuuuffff.. hopefully wud b able to make it with less ease.. sigh*

But is the one on fort area closer to Dadar or something??!! N are the train stations easy to figure out, like which train to take where, where the end stop would be n all.. N are the autoguys less fuzzyyyy??!! Cos in Blore, if the travel distance is short, they don't come, even if you pay extra. hmmmm.. Thanks!!

N Im joining the evening batch.. Are the evening hours cool enough to travel to and fro??!!

Also here's the accommodation details given by them:
YWCA Andheri - 30days monthly rate - Rs.10000/-
15days stay - Rs.8106/-
Per day - 500 + 50 + 37 (some tax & stuff) = 587
Membership fees - compulsory 150 (one-time fee)
Electricity - 200 (for the usage of notebooks)

1. The place is clean but basic. Donot expect any luxuries.
2. As far as I remember the gates closed for the night at 10 or 10:30pm. Please make sure of the time.
3. Its about 5 mins in an auto from andheri station. Andheri station to dadar station is about 20 mins train ride.
4. Dadar is eqidistant from Fort area and andheri in terms of travel time by train(any other mode of transport is impractical in Mumbai)
5. If you can afford the fort YWCA international center over 2 months then go for it. Its quite nice. A friend of mine stayed there and I visited her there. Its nicer than the Andheri place. Its like a hotel, not a hostel.
6. If your classes are in the evening then Andheri is better than Fort area. In the morning the crowds go from north to south and in the evening from south to north. If you stay in andheri you will be travelling north to south in the eveing which will be less crowded.
7. Train stations are easy to figure out. Reach a day early and ask the help of one of the girls in the hostel. Travel with her to her workplace and get back on your own. It will help you get your bearings
8. Mumbai autorickshaws are best in the country. They almost never refuse passengers and charge the proper metered fare.
9. My experience - In India, Mumbai is the best place for a single woman to live and work. So dont worry

I jus enquired with d Fort area one, n the lady informed me that the place is especially for full-time working ladies and that for short-term stays like mine would be accommodated at their guest house. N it would cost 500+50per day for accommodation+food n no additional charges like electricity or so..... It costs kinda same at Andheri as well...

Ask her if the "guest house" is the international center.

Its the international center that is good. Hostel is the same standard as the Andheri hostel.
