I got charged 480rupees with one backpack and a small rucksack from intenational to Fort area. I don't moan to much about being taken for a ride in India but i refused to tip the driver. As you like he said. but i heard it was 250 rupees

A tip to a taxi driver is not customary in India anyway.
He may have just taken you via a longer route. Aadil recently posted somewhere on the shortest route between the airport and the fort area in Mumbai- you could search for future reference. Your thread title says, "Official taxi....." If you went by prepaid taxi, you should have paid the approved rate before even getting in the cab, so I am confused there with what exactly happened.

Rs. 480.00 from the international terminal to Fort area is a reasonable fare.

It depends on which official agency you are talking about, if it was the first counter then it is a private car hiring agency which is in the range of about Rs500 to 800 depending on which car you hire as it is not a taxi service anyway. The other counter is the official taxi service called the Airport Taximen's service which charges a fixed rate depending on the area you wish to travel to in Mumbai which are divided into a few slabs with fixed rates for each distance wise slab. The maximum is about Rs375 for the ride to the CST/Fort/Colaba area with a separate charge of Rs5 per bag. The airconditioned Blue and Silver Cool Cabs cost about 25% more than the normal black and yellow taxis. There is no need to worry about which route the driver takes as the fare is fixed and there is no extra charge if the driver takes you by a longer route or is stuck in traffic. Hope you find this information useful.
Cheers, Aadil.

1) there are 2 booths near the entrance. One is a private concern and the other is run by the New Delhi Police.
I've only ever used the police booth. 2) The concept is that you pay at the booth. This is a fixed charge. You are allocated a docket. This is given to the driver at the end of the journey. There is no more to pay. 3) If the driver takes you a longer route, then you don't pay anything more. He only gets paid once the docket is returned to the police. If there are any problems, the police have the drivers details on record. I know it can be annoying (no pun intended) to be taken for a ride when you first arrive in India, esp. when you think you know the way things work there. Cheers Zoltan

It is run by the Taximen's Union in Mumbai along with the Regional Transport Authority which fixes the fare slabs and prices. These are painted on a fare board just behind the counter so that you can select which area you wish to travel to when booking the taxi. The other one is a private car hiring agency with higher fares and better airconditioned cars but then they usually charge the whole day's fare for a car hire just to get to the city from the airport so it is not really worth it. Sometimes they may bargain a bit and bring down the price to about Rs500 or so for the journey into town.
Cheers, Aadil. |
