From Domestic airport to Colaba would be around Rs200. Anything else is a rip off by taking a much longer route to get into the city!!!

Cheers,
Aadil.

Also beware that most taxi drivers still use an old card which is not as per the new rules since April 2007 and most people don't even know about the slight change (decrease) in the fares which have been in force since the last one year now. The minimum still remains Rs13 but there is a drop in prices after every few points rise in the fare to make the prices of CNG instead of the Diesel earlier on fair for the passenger.

Cheers,
Aadil.

Yes, good idea, Captain.

We saw there was a taxi fare conversion chart in at least one of the free Mumbai city guides that are available (booklet for what's on this month, eg shows, festivals, restaurants, accommodation advertising). We got a copy from a good friend of ours who had been in Mumbai not long before our trip. Perhaps they can be picked up from hotels or an India travel agency?

Here's the ones for Mumbai (printable) & Delhi (on-line only). Mumbai is not so much of a problem - just print off the card & show it in case there are doubts about the correct fare.

In Delhi however, it may be a problem getting any of the drivers to accept the "real" fare.

A taxi driver in Delhi took us to completely the wrong place after assuring us he knew where Humayan's tomb was.. I mean completely wrong.. We refused to pay him and there was a big argument with all these other taxi drivers getting involved.. we just walked off and left them to it.. The same thing happened in Jaisalmer and again we refused to pay. I'm still not sure we did the right thing.

I didn't really mind when they said they knew the way and then stopped and asked (again and again) - but I really objected to these guys just taking us to a completely different place and wanting money for it.

In this situation, I insist to be taken to the correct place and make it clear that the driver has done the wrong thing - in fact I have refused to leave the rickshaw until I was delivered to my destination - sometimes the poorest with little English will say they know the destination out of desperation - it becomes obvious after a while they don't know - intervene early and ask a passerby

Don't be afraid to ask anybody in the street for a questimate about a taxi/rickshaw fare. The locals know best and you can then use it as a mental reference when you're ready to start hailing taxis and negotiating cost.

Rs. 500 is more than double the correct fare. He well & truly ripped YOU off.

Last week i helped a friend to Lokmanya tilak terminus, from well inside bandra west. My friend did not know the way, so he took her for a ride & conveniently lost the way. He also gave her a good Bandra, Khar & Santacruz darshan, before reaching the highway. Besides all this, the taxi was overloaded with luggage on the carrier, in the boot & on the back seat. Including all this, the fare came to Rs. 250.

The correct fare from LTT to Hyatt should be a bit below Rs. 200.

hahahaha. I've never seen anyone worried they'd ripped off a taxi driver in mumbai. believe me, it is much more likely he ripped you off. .. looking at where you've travelled, i've gone the opposite direction for 250 after some serious haggling (fighting with the tout... who also tried the exchanging a 500 for a 100 note, driving me out of the airport then having to make him take me back when he tried to switch drivers for an exorbitant fee much more than agreed to...)

So, really, you paid 250 for the ride and 250 for avoiding the hassle of arguing with him to get a correct fare. No worries.

Uh... the auto wallahs in Bangalore have this, too. "The official government meter, madame." It's about 3 times higher than the actual meter fare.... Official, my foot. At least not here.
