Many a times i was not able to board train during peak hours during my short stay of 20 days in Mumbai. And on top of that i had a friend who use to like smoke a lot.. it was very diffucult with him boarding and getting off the train.. Once we were in .. it was okay and didnt had to do anything the crowd use to push us at door.

Thank you for that info and that doesn't sound bad at all! I feel quite a lot better after reading your post.

I don't know where in Mumbai you live, but we should meet up at some point when I'm there so I can buy you a beer.

If you are going to live at Dadar, I live relatively close by at Mumbai Central [three stations after Dadar while going towards Churchgate]

As amyl says, I don't drink beer. We can very well meet up, you can have beer while I'll have some orange or lemon juice.

Looking foeward to see ya in Mumbai; IN the train too

It shows a Mumbai bound suburban train at Dadar. It has just departing from Dadar, where a large crowd alighted. The time is 12.48 on a weekday, so definitely very off peak.

Thank you! That picture has less crowd than a typical train here in Rotterdam or Amsterdam at peak hour. OK, so that is Dadar OFF peak hour, but that's definitely just fine.

Mumbai Local Trains

Last week I boarded at the terminus in full gear: huge backpack, little backpack and laptop bag. My first ride on the train. I thought I'd stand in a 'strategic' place, where I'd not block anyone. The gentlemen told me I'd better put my packs under the seat and above on the racks. I protested, saying I didn't mind standing. They laughed and told me that I was definitely standing in a bad place, so I did as they said and, believe me, they were right! If you know how and when to follow the right advice, you'll save lots of hassles. The next time I was on the train with full gear, thought I'd stand again... the gentlemen advised me to do this and sit there, and once again I was glad I listened to them!

Not that I was brave, I was just unexperienced!
Next time I will know better!!

And yes, I will agree that Mumbai people are extremely helpful. They come up to those in need, offer help, and, after giving help, they just leave with a smile - not asking for baksheesh, like I've seen in so many other places... or maybe I was just lucky in Mumbai and/or unlucky elsewhere....?

Well guys I will see this for myself soon enough.

If I want to, I can start a 7 lakh per annum IT job from June in Mumbai. The offer is there.

However, my family is highly discouraging me to move to Mumbai. So I guess I will decide everything on my upcoming trip to India.

It's not just the trains, but it will also depend on things like the heat, water, pollution, people etc.

Unlike a few other people, I found the Mumbai people to be beyond rude when I was there in July 2006. It was just sad. Maybe I just had bad luck.

I'll update this thread in May with up-to-date pictures and video of me in the Mumbai train system!

Before alighting the trains

I yelled out "NOW EVERYBODY MOVE!!" each time I wanted to get off the trains in Mumbai (of course with a big smile). Was very surprised how it worked!
