Mumbai itenary - expert local advice reqd
Hi
Wondering if any local can help with this itenary. We shall be in Mumbai for two and a half days and want to visit the places listed. We plan to hire a car for the 2 days and would like help in terms of a possible route as there are various things that we would like to see, but dont know how close they are to each other. We shall be staying in the Colaba area and would like to see the following places: Linking Rd (shopping area in Bandra), Chor bazaar, Crawfords market, Elephanta caves, Chowpatty Beach (Evening walk), Walkeshwar Temple & Banganga Tank, Dhobi Ghat, Fashion Street, Film City, Mumbadevi Temple, Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum, Tower of Silence. Day One we arrive in Mumbai about 9.ooam and I assume it will take an hour or so to get to hotel check in etc etc so tour can start at midday. I thought day two could start with a trip to the Elephanta caves, and then a bit of shopping. Thanks

Most of that stuff is near Colaba. I wouldn't hire a car for most of it; I would just take the occasional taxi. The Crawford Market is vast. Just have one cab drop you off, wander for a few hours, then have another return you to your hotel. The Mumbadevi Temple is in the greater Crawford Market (the area is a collection of variously named markets--Bhuleshwar, Zaveri, etc.--with the gothic architecture of the Crawford fish market building serving as landmark). The boats to Elephanta leave from the Gateway to India, right in Colaba. The Dhobi Ghat laundry tanks are north toward the airport, but only 20 minutes or so by car. Chowpatty Beach is not far from Colaba either.
You won't have a problem getting to those places. I don't know London, but do you know New York? Manhattan is long and thin, like Mumbai. You're staying in Lower Manhattan (Colaba), on Wall Street. Elephanta boats depart from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. Crawford is Washington Square. Chowpatty beach is at Chelsea Piers. The Dhobi Ghat is at Times Square. Etc. |
