Mumbai - how long, where to stay & what to do
I will be travelling in South India in Feb with a friend. Mumbai is our entry point. After that we will be going to Goa and Kerala.
My friend has relatives in Mumbai and will be nattering away with them for a bit - I plan to visit them too but will probably leave them to enjoy their reminisences. How many days could we usefully fill sightseeing around the city? Any suggestions for me spending say a day on my own? I have been to India before but not to Mumbai, so I have some idea what to expect. Also any suggestions for a 2 or 3 star hotel. Bentleys has been recommended. Anyone stayed there? |

I'll tell you what I did when I had a day with nothing to do in Mumbai. I stayed at Colaba, seemingly less crowded than other Mumbai parts, great colonial architecture and if you decide to wak around there are nice places to stop by eat, drink, chat with other tourists for a wee bit etc. Take a taxi , Rs.250 for 5 hrs to see the sights within a 5km circumference, some hills it's called. But you do have quite a bit to see incl. synangogues, the sassoon library, a house where Gandhi spent some time, very interesting place with all his communications to world leaders at the time (incl. Hitler) on display, towers of slience, again very intriguing and sacred to the Parsi faith.
How I ended up visiting synagogues is a different story, the driver kept asking me if I wanted to see the "joo garden", 30 mins later I still couldn't figure out what he was proposing when we passed by what looked like a synagogue and I told him "that must be it", he took it for an order to stop. After being directed by the inhabitants of the synagogue to older and bigger ones I was taken to his "joo garden" which happened to be a garden with plants shaped like animals. Zoo garden is what it's called. |

Elephanta is the traditional daytime time killer. Boats leave from Gateway of India- or did, but dunno if the latest bombing changed things
