Mumbai Hotel Advice

Hello all. I have been reading these forms frequently in preparation for my first trip to India but my first post is for the ever popular hotel advice. We will be arriving in Mumbai on January 14 at about noon and wanted to reserve a hotel for our first 2 nights stay. We were looking at all of the following and I have sent out a few e-mail enquiries and have received a few quotes:

Hotel Diplomat – 2990 Rupees/night
Hotel Godwin – 3465/night
Hotel Suba Palace – 3025/night

We are also considering the Ascot but I haven’t received a price from them yet.

I am not sure which to choose and was hoping for some recommendations from those who might have first hand experience with any of these, or who might have other recommendations in similar price range. Also, do these prices seem fair for what is on offer? And lastly, has anyone had problems (meaning fraud issues) with providing credit card details by fax or e-mail to secure a room?

Thanks in advance for any advice on offer.

Hi,

Bombay is on the whole a lot more expensive than the rest of India, in particular Coloba, which is where most of the hotels are.
I have stayed at Godwin and found it quite good though probably not value for money. I would also recommend Bentleys Hotel which is around half the price and just down the road. For something a bit better try Hotel Harbour View which is on Apollo Bunder Road overlooking the harbour (doh! as the name might suggest).
I have often booked through email using credit card with Bentleys and Harbour View and have never had a problem.
